All of this is, of course, complete bullshit as learning an actual skill is the opposite of rigid, programming is essentially the creative field most removed from any real-world constraints and every craft (including programming/software engineering) is, by definition, a goddamned art form.

My projection is that we'll probably see a huge explosion of projects created like this.LLMs shitting out the most convoluted shitty codebases with the worst security imaginable, inline documentation that's just straight-up wrong and nobody understanding how anything works or relates to each other. It will probably take a couple years until this completely explodes and companies will beg any halfway competent software engineer to please rewrite all this garbage from scratch.

Many companies will of course try to eschew complete rewrites, instead making actual humans interact with these garbage codebases and it will be grueling for the humans involved and the projects will still be inherently unfixable. We can only hope that the majority of companies like that go bankrupt, but given my personal experience, there's always a surprisingly big amount of holdouts of spectacular incompetence.

@futurebird Back when I was in elementary school, we had someone who was basically doing an internship as part of their formal training to become a teacher. They were still highly motivated and we talked a bunch about the education system. She told me a lot about studies and pilot projects giving amazing results by increasing student autonomy.Back then, I was still naive and thought schools would improve – but since then student autonomy has only been clamped down more and more.

@quinn How the fuck do we live in a world so stupid that this is a statement that actually has merit and might be unironically true? :thonking:

@quinn Honestly, up to that point I was still somewhat regularly lurking on 4chan and I quite liked that the brony culture brought some explicit positivity to the site.In hindsight, them being "run out of town" was probably instrumental to really crystallize the hate culture already on there into seeding what would then become the alt-right…So, yeah, absolutely demented statement – but definitely not without merit.

@futurebird Sorry if I missed some sarcasm in there, but for an explanation: Staying in Epsteins good graces for continued access to abusing his trafficking victims seems to be the obvious one.

@futurebird Yeah, I don't think it would've made much of a moral difference if the girls trafficked had all been 18 when it happened to them.I also don't buy that Epstein had so many rich and powerful visitors and none of them could figure out that something was deeply wrong there, independently of the girls ages.At least to me it looks like we're dealing with a class of people who legitimately believe they are above law and morals.

@futurebird Yeah, I'm gonna go ahead and assume that it's the latter for at least a sizable chunk of the people who were involved with Epstein. As far as I can tell, rich and powerful people virtually always have a completely warped sense of self-esteem, with many of them seeming to think they're damn near gods, i.e. inherently better than us plebians.

@futurebird Yeah, this is the sort of thing why I'm allergic to idolizing people – not just myself, but when I see others doing it, too. It's why Jacob Applebaum could be a rapey asshole for years on end before enough people finally spoke out and he was kicked out of the community – he was culturally entrenched because so many people idolized him…

I kinda wonder if LLMs will start pestering people live on IRC for solutions to code problems… :thaenkin:

In the spirit of whatever the fuck you want to call what the senate democrats in the US just did, I would like to point USians to a very pertinent slogan that has been in use in Germany for over a century now:Wer hat uns verraten? Sozialdemokraten!Who betrayed us? Social democrats! It just never loses pertinence because we apparently haven't been able to internalize this lesson on a societal level. There's also songs – like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-dT5mvnk40

Another pertinent song in this context: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Y0xkvw-u3sWer hat uns verraten? Die Sozialdemokraten! Wer war mit dabei? Die Grüne Partei!Who betrayed us? The social democrats! Who was with them? The green party!Equivalents for these two parties seem to exist in many places and most of them have a common feature: When in doubt, they'll always place the neoliberal capitalist world order over their self-professed values of social progressivism and environmentalism.

Do I have a fix for this? Besides "we need political parties with actual values" – no. But I think it's nice to know that we share some of our pains.

I think the best we can hope for our USian friends to happen is that by the time this disaster of a government is finally done, the US party system will have splintered into something with more than two parties.
