@ChrisWere @uoou Yeah, and when they do try and resuscitate those areas, it's often just big corporate chains that swoop in now, which is super boring.Commercial rents are too high to get small businesses into them that would actually have some character and breathe life into a neighborhood. I'd much rather a locally owned bookstore, or coffee shop, or whatever to yet another bank, burger chain, or some such.

@ChrisWere @uoou Good chat. I'm definitely with Drew in that I think one of the biggest problems with politics is do-nothing politicians that just leave people disappointed and going to the extremes after.I view it as another argument in favor of proportional representation, as it can make it harder for that sort of thing to happen.

@ChrisWere It's just nice to have results that include places I'm not familiar with and are actually pretty interesting.Google dominated search is a bunch of the same stuff over and over again, and it gets boring after a while.

@ChrisWere I'm on Waterfox at 720p and haven't come across any yet (knock on wood?). Definitely noticing a lot more "this video is sponsored by" nonsense in the middle of them. It's not an accident that the most viewed part on these videos when hovering over the timeline is right when the sponsor stuff ends.I get that people want to get paid and would rather be making videos than be in the rat race, but these sponsor things are pushing me away from the platform.

@ChrisWere Nice to see a Freebooters after all this time, with a good-sized Dagothian tangent. =)I didn't know you watched Steve Wallis, Chris. That guy is great!Drew's idea of a BBS sounds fun. Don't see many of those anymore. Also, I'm in agreement that the Web is dead. I spend so little time on it now. I just feel pushed away by what it has become and would much rather spend my time reading a book or playing a game. I still like Gemini, but it's been quieting down over time.

@ChrisWere The lack of color in the world does bother me. Even something simple like a proper return of print t-shirts would be nice. There are a few people that still do that, but not really.I'm sure it would lead to a few obnoxious choices, but there would be a lot of fun stuff that would put smiles on people's faces as well.

@ChrisWere Oh yeah, I'm all for obnoxiousness generally. I'm just thinking of, say, hardcore Trump types with no filters, and the sort of obnoxiousness their particular style of print t-shirts might embrace. I can do without that. There are plenty of other flavors of obnoxious I'd probably quite enjoy.

It seems like the Fediverse is one of the few places where people talk TO each other. Twitter was a place for people to make a bullhorn and talk AT people, and it seems like Bluesky is becoming just as bad. It's not genuine conversation, just engagement farming.I was curious why people were going there of late, but the place is kinda shit, and ultimately just boring. It's way more fun here.

@ChrisWere For sure. Bluesky and Twitter have a similar flavor than what's going on here. Fedi does its own thing in a weird and wonderful way.

@ChrisWere I just find Bluesky attracted a lot of people that wanted to treat Twitter as a glorified RSS feed to shill whatever it is they do with optional deluge of hashtags. They wouldn't survive here because people would tell them off for so obnoxiously trying to sell something.

@ChrisWere The US-centric part really bothers me. Any vaguely general interest subreddit tends to suffer from it.The place can be vaguely useful as an information aggregator, but that's about it these days. Comments there are either bots or toxic much of the time.

@ChrisWere I guess I can see why they'd do that if they use their real name there. Even then, for a lot of people there's probably someone else out there with the exact same name posting about their own stuff.I just want to see the cognitive dissonance as they learn that the people funding Bluesky are the sort they're trying to flee. =p

@stux Which would be hilarious wasting resources on people firing up Pleroma on their VPS which costs the user almost nothing.

@stux We're already seeing the early stages of realignment as countries like Canada look to diversify trade away from the US (which is saying something given their historically close ties). Most will look at the US as too unpredictable going forward and will create new alliances. America wanted isolationism, now they're going to get it, and suffer as a result.

Wasn't expecting a Pewdiepie video about him switching to Linux. =O It was cute seeing him get all excited about tile managers. What next? He creates a Peertube instance?
