@ChrisWere Those places really are unpleasant to be on now. Almost everyone there are so beholden to algorithms with how they go about making content that the soul has long since been drained from the place.Even getting away from the silos themselves, if someone is just making their own site, it winds up being soulless in design, with a lot of choices made to tap into SEO.Indieweb and Fediverse is becoming much more palatable. Stuff with an actual soul.

@pennywhether Totally agree. In some ways I'm too scared to even post on YouTube for fear of fucking up my channel. And people don't comment there any more, and I'm pretty sure 70% of comments are AI generated. As if you need an AI to generate: "Hey cool vid bro."The comments people leave on the Fedi are much higher quality and insightful, and there's more of them.

@ChrisWere It's like the Fedi is comprised largely of well-adjusted people. If they don't like a video, article, or whatever, they stop and get on with their day. Meanwhile, a lot of YouTube users and the like will actively complain in the comments and dwell on how they didn't like it.

@uoou @pennywhether I've noticed something deeply worrying. Every time I look on some art that moves me online, I immediately stop and have to check if it's AI. I really really really don't like that I can't tell the difference between a lot of AI and art.

@ChrisWere @pennywhether Yup, me too. I suspect this is true for everyone who knows what’s happening. It’s terrifying. But a little bit of me is happy to see art get its bubble popped a little.I think dealing with this will be healthy for art in the long run. And… age old thing on the left. But automation is good, so long as the fruits of that productivity are shared (which they never are under capitalism). And, why does a robot making art degrade art, but a robot making a car not degrade cars?Everyone who makes or builds or contributes to the making or building of anything is a creative person.

@uoou @ChrisWere My habits have become somewhat similar. I'm actively perusing the web way less. Check the news in the morning, wander around indie sites (NeoCities was a godsend for this), then mostly use YouTube to grab obscure music I've been trying to hunt down for years when some anonymous hero decides to upload it.For me, the modern web has just become boring. Corporations have made their silos into destinations that are the equivalent of mindlessly flipping TV channels in the 90s.

@uoou @ChrisWere One would hope that automation leads to people having more time in a good way, not just structural unemployment and starvationThe thought of degrading art makes me think people focus too much on the end result, ignoring the process. I get that it's a career for people and that there is a lot of commodification in art.Even if AI made all sorts of art, it doesn't take away from a person's self expression and indulging their imaginations. I just hope I'm not romanticizing here

@ChrisWere @uoou Yeah, a lot of the best art is a reaction to something. It doesn't just happen in a vacuum. AI will make works of art, but the creator is a machine. It didn't live a life and have things happen to it that stirred its heart, driving it to put together a specific creation, be it a painting, music, or whatever.AI works on inputted parameters, not life experiences.

@ChrisWere @uoou Yeah, and that's why it will struggle to resonate with people. It can serve some a function on a base level, maybe even be spectacle, but finding deep connection with an audience may be a tough sell. Lyrics in a song connect with people for a reason, and AI can't come at it from the same angle as a person.

@uoou @ChrisWere Absolutely. There are plenty of people with ideas that don't know how to bring them into reality, but if they could at least articulate them to the AI they can get something that hopefully approaches what they had in mind. It's kinda like those posts on the tattoos subreddit of "what I asked for vs what I got" and the person had an idea they could only express as stick figures, then the artist made something amazing from it.

@ChrisWere @uoou Yeah, and when they do try and resuscitate those areas, it's often just big corporate chains that swoop in now, which is super boring.Commercial rents are too high to get small businesses into them that would actually have some character and breathe life into a neighborhood. I'd much rather a locally owned bookstore, or coffee shop, or whatever to yet another bank, burger chain, or some such.

@ChrisWere @uoou @pennywhether One could argue that what we appreciate in art and gives us value, is beauty.I'm aware that introducing this concept doesn't help in answering what art is or should be, but I'm thinking about this a lot lately. As in: can AI "understand" beauty and create something beautiful? or is it all just automated "design"?For a more conservative view, I highly recommend viewing this old BBC documentary episode, "Why Beauty Matters": https://peertube.linuxrocks.online/w/4trXnArWwKS3L5qpouSoeR
