Part of my job is developing and managing a large cluster of SMTP servers. I am going to donate free SMTP services to any Mastodon instance that wants it. You'll simply give us your Mastodon instance URL so we can verify it, and then you'll be able to plug in the credentials for the SMTP service and it will just work. You'll have access to our corporate management and statistic tools as well.There won't be a cap and the rate limit is so high you should not be hitting it (1000/s)Servers that promote violence are not eligible. Adult content is okay as long as it is consenting.I hope to have this available before the end of the year. Comment and let me know if you are interested.

@yes One of the major roadblocks to launching an instance is the cost of using an SMTP service. Getting that for free is one less hurdle for people. I really want to see Mastodon succeed.

@yes I Googled that, I believe that's a relay for hosting an SMTP server on a home network that has port 25 blocked.What I am offering is a full scale MTA that a business would use to serve transactional emails.

@peepstein @gme @MattHodges @micahflee I work on SMTP servers professionally and I disagree with you. Most of our workload is begging and scraping at the feet of MSAs (gmail, outlook) to stay unblacklisted. Also, confused by your statement “stringent” SPF/DKIM rules. Those are binary things, you either have them enabled or you don’t. If you don’t have them enabled no MSA will even accept your mail.

@dump_stack Yeah, I think it’s not great if we are just going to blacklist anyone that has been a cop from being able to make a living. Plus socieity would be chaos without regulation of some kind.But, then I think about the kind of person that would be cool with implementing technology stuff for cops. I don’t think at the end of the day a lot of the people targetted by police are deserving of their treatment. So implementing technology for them is knowingly enabling that abuse.So I guess I’m waffling, I don’t think the level of anger agaisnt rpi is justified, but I also enjoy that people are giving them shit for entertaining this cop.

If you were heading Mastodon what would be the number one thing you would prioritize? I think for me it would be popularity based feed.
