@marmite The thing to keep clear in mind is; are you referring to 'free' as in free beer, gratis, costing nothing. or 'free' as in free speech, libre, in which case it might cost something. The second, 'free/libre' is the more important principle of the two.

@ParadeGrotesque That is quite ridiculous. I mean that assumes access to a mail server, probably the Internet and it seems perfectly reasonable to assume not everyone has Internet access. And even if that have access via the schools, that's not available all the time and therefore the communications can't be relied upon. If we spent as much time teaching our children properly & not inflicting technology on them we'd have much better level of education, including engineers, scientist & IT workers

@seven1m I don't think there is anything wrong with you :) I do think there is everything wrong with how to teach 'Computer Science'. It is the only engineering discipline not taught as Engineering. We don't use exemplars to build on, we don't cover the developmental history of CS, we don't build from a foundation of basics. So across much of the software industry we just reinvent or just create another version of something that's already got 100s of similar products.

@SDF So interesting to watch. Reminded me of when I'd connect to the Data Center via a 1200 baud teletype TTY to do work. As part of that teletype machine was a paper tape puch, so to have a back up you'd create a paper tape as well.
