I've been here what three days, and I'm starting to judge people by the instance they belong to and worry that they judge me the same way

Mastodon habits I'm trying to lock in, rather than revert to my Twitter habits:1) use CWs liberally2) when threading, set first post to "public" and the rest to "not listed"3) don't forget the description text when posting images (had to work on that in Twitter too)4) throw in hashtags like it was Tumblr or Instagram when you want to reach beyond your followers5) pin and visit hashtags to find more people6) boost a lot

#introduction I've been a techie #academic #librarian since 2001: link resolver, ezproxy, #digitization, #digitalpreservation. Now I'm in the #DigitalScholarshipCentre, teaching & consulting on anything digital & scholarly. I'm a #philologist underneath (Ph.D. on #medievalLatin lit). My research is half #digitalscholarship / #digitalhumanities tools, half a blog / #biography on my g'father #RobertCBinkley (d.1940), who pioneered a lot of what I do, but in the twilight of the #predigital age.

I don't think anyone has done this, so I've shared my collection of #ReceptioGate resources as a public closed group on #Zotero: https://www.zotero.org/groups/4971050/receptiogate/library . Anyone can see the resources, only members can add or edit.

If you'd like to join the group and add resources (I'm sure there's more), just request an invitation. For now I'll only admit people whose activity on Mastodon or on Twitter shows bona fides in their engagement with the topic (since we know what some people are like), but if a group forms we can discuss the best way of managing membership.

If the LLMs are built out of huge swaths of what humanity has been saying, maybe the lesson is that we haven't been saying much that's interesting

@stux but what if I'm a train whose AI has been programmed to make me feel like I'm reading a sign like humans do when I'm actually only accessing my large language model?

(concludes, after outlining benefits of microfilm and interlibrary loan etc.) "The legitimate equities of authors as fixed by copyright need not suffer. The proper reward due to the custodians for their acquisition and careful custody of their treasures must always be accorded them. But neither copyright nor ownership rights should be exploited piratically and to the detriment of full freedom of communication among mankind."

Robert C. Binkley on the channels of scholarly communication, 1938: "The essence of all these procedures is communication from writer to reader, whether the communication be immediate or deferred, to one reader or to many, to known persons or to persons unknown ... There are indeed some property tenures vested at different points along these channels of communication. They are like the tolls along the river, some of them necessary to keep the channel open, some of them functionally piratical."

(continues) "But in general it can be said that thoughts are still of all things in the world the most nearly free, that most of the written texts upon which thought is recorded are freely disclosed to those who would examine them, and that people who hold ideas worthy of expression feel rather an urge to express them and share them than to withhold them from the world."

From ebay to me to Internet Archive: a promotional blotter for Recordak #microfilm of cancelled cheques, probably 1930s (after 1933). It shows the layout of the 16mm microfilm they used. https://archive.org/details/recordak_blotter

Jesse Shera, “The College Library of the Future,” 1936. http://www.jstor.org/stable/25688791 - "Librarians have their faults, many of them, but in a mad academic world, blindly seeking distinction through athletic glory, led by fascist minded administrators who have completely forgotten the meaning of education, there seems to be little hope for any very important role for the librarian. This is not said, however, to excuse the librarian for his inactivity-- ... 1/2

... - for his manifest indifference toward his social obligations to the community he serves. Again, the charge that I would bring against the librarian is that by united action he has not fought to overcome these menacing trends. If his condition is to be greatly improved we must begin by completely remaking the academic world." 2/2
