Christopher Nolan says that there is a danger in having content only exist in a streaming format, that physical media is the only way to hedge against its disappearance from public access in the future.I've long advocated for owning music in particular (as much as ownership exists these days) in part from the financial standpoint of paying into a collection that isn't anchored to a streaming platform. Hadn't thought about the existential issue of streaming-only contenthttps://www.msn.com/en-us/movies/news/christopher-nolan-says-streaming-only-content-is-a-danger-and-can-get-taken-down-guillermo-del-toro-calls-owning-physical-media-a-responsibility/ar-AA1kfSfB

Well, deleting my long dormant Dropbox accounts was the easiest big tech extraction I've completed so far this week.

As a part of my year-end file organizing, I finally migrated some older photo edits that pre-date a 're-branding' of my photography business around 2018. I care much less about keeping consistency in my photo watermarks so I'm excited to start sharing these photos here. Here's a shot from the summit of Pinnacle Mountain outside Little Rock, AR captured March 2017. I've previously dedicated this one to the "Arkansas Doesn't Have Mountains" crowd.#Arkansas #LandscapePhotography #Photography

Stumbled across a sunrise sequence of Monte Fitz Roy (Cerro Chaltén) from my trip to Patagonia in January 2020. It's hard to believe that this was nearly 4 years ago now, but what an incredible and unforgettable moment. A sharp contrast with the year that followed.#Argentina #Patagonia #Photography #Landscape #LandscapePhotography

The snow started falling in Bella Vista, AR about an hour ago and we're seeing rapid accumulation occurring. The heaviest snow will be moving through over the next hour or so before leaving the area, but Northwest Arkansas will be able to claim their first accumulating snow of the season!#arwx #Arkansas #snow

I'm seeing posts from fiends on other social media showing higher accumulation rates to the south of us, from images it looks to be an inch or more so far, which is further south and a higher amount than forecast. We are in the south after all, so that means that several school districts are closed for the day, but not uniformly. Since the snow picked up right as bus routes started, it was probably too late to make the call for districts that would have otherwise closed over half an inch.

The snow's moved on, maybe 1/4 of inch here. But enough to make things really peaceful from the back deck.Good for the soul.#arwx #arkansas #snow

One of the peculiarities of home ownership is that if you are blessed with standard sizes for everything, you are deemed responsible enough that you may purchase compatible accessories directly from the hardware store. If you do not have standard sizes (windows), there is no way to order certain products (blinds) without a mandatory appointment to measure said windows, then pay an additional fee approaching $100 per unit for special ordering, even if an existing size increment is available.

No way to order direct from the manufacturer. No way to circumvent store 'policy.' The premium for this 'service' ends up being a roughly 50% or greater increase per unit over the base price for a non-standard but existing increment. So 6 months in and this is why we have not purchased blinds, nor will we likely purchase anything nicer than fabric shades. I have a tape measure and I can assure you that my measurements are correct. Please spare me the extra hoops and fees.

I saw this story resurface earlier today, originally reported in July, which some have framed as "labor camps" for people with mental illnesses, from those struggling with addiction to those on Adderall and antidepressants. While I don't disagree that being outdoors and physical activity can be helpful (e.g. endorphins from working out), the way he's framed this is very yucky with "troubled teen" industry, abduct you in the dark of night for your own good vibes.https://gizmodo.com/rfk-jr-suggests-sending-people-on-antidepressants-to-wellness-farms-for-reparenting-2000478962

I've spoken on this topic before, as I knew of a couple people growing up who, I shit you not, were abducted in the middle of the night in front of their parents with the promise of rehabilitation at remote centers in the middle of nowhere. There is a Netflix documentary on the subject called "The Program" and Paris Hilton has been a vocal advocate to eliminate these types of centers. It's hard not to imagine that what RFK Jr is proposing wouldn't get privatized and follow a similar path.

This comes back to the deep, deep irony that the party of limited government wants to weasel its way into dictating a patient's plan of care, which should only be determined between the patient and their doctors and that nobody should ever be coerced into participating in any type of rehabilitation center or program without their consent.Adderall and antidepressants may not be right for everyone, but it's not up to the govt to say that everyone using them should be treated as addicts.

Can we stop pretending that phone numbers are required for online transactions? I've never once received a follow-up phone call with questions about my order. Payment confirmation is usually instantaneous, and my address is typically required for the payment information and/or shipping if there are questions. Hard not to believe that my phone number isn't being used as a unique customer identifier and thus collected entirely for the sake of collecting data.

@stux I started the process of trying to migrate from pixelfed.social to gram.social. Once I create an account alias to initiate the migration process I hit a dead end. Quick search found some old Github and Reddit posts encountering the same issue. Is it possible to migrate between Pixelfed instances or is that still a work in progress?

I've stated before and I can't emphasize enough how pervasive the fear of urban areas is on the far right. It permeates almost every corner of "no-coast" society to the point that it impacts even someone like myself (not right leaning and with extensive travel experience).I have to constantly remind myself that the messages I've been bombarded with over almost 4 decades do not mesh with most of the experiences I've had visiting large cities.https://paulkrugman.substack.com/p/the-hellscapes-of-their-minds

"The Hellscapes of Their Minds" is a perfect way to describe the disconnect with reality. They want so desperately to see the other half of the country as murderous wastelands they'll ignore any evidence to the contrary.
