A thing I wish is that major publishers had internal teams that collaborated on an open source, best-in-class blogging/social platform for authors that had ActivityPub and various social media platforms integrations baked in, that the publisher would host under the writer's domain.Instead writers have to be their own IT teams, or hire someone, and largely build their audience on X, Instagram, TikTok, etc.

"why is that publishers' problem?" Because when those platforms inevitably rug-pull, the publisher *also* is hurt by the lower book sales due to audience disconnection.

"why open source?" Building this thing properly is more than one publisher can probably subsidize on their own, but working together through open source they can probably do it.

"why under the writer's own domain? Why not put it on the publisher's domain?" Because why would a writer choose to engage? They still don't own their connection to their audience, except now it's owned by someone with a smaller audience and less skin in the game. Give the writer ownership if you want them to engage. The writer should be able to change publishers without losing anything. They should be able to self-host without losing anything.

This won't happen, but it's the world I want to live in. I miss the writers I used to follow on X.

I can't wait for five years from now when there's a massive security incident and the retro boils down to "oh yeah remember that period where our industry thought 'just not caring if your code was correct' was the next big thing?" and we all just sit in embarrassed silence as we try not to think about what that means for our current security and reliability postures.
