Things I thought I would never know: at least five cats can fit in a starlink satellite internet dish

Today I learned that:- All the white press concern-trolling about "vaccine hesitancy" in Black and Latine people in amerika was a lie. Black people are the most likely to be vaccinated and Latine people are second most likely of groups for which there's data- White evangelicals are continuing their death cult shit, and- Whites are 2x as likely to be antivaxxers as everyone else despite easier vaccine access & easier access to education

Also, people with serious health conditions are more likely to have gotten themselves vaccinated than people without serious health conditions. Here's the full report.https://www.kff.org/coronavirus-covid-19/poll-finding/kff-covid-19-vaccine-monitor-january-2022/

I have this kinda irrational affection for the drag racers in my city. When I hear them vrooming around at 3 AM, I'm kinda like "hell yeah" even though it's maybe not exactly the best activity for collective upliftI like how they find the least-pedestrianed streets at the least crowded times, and have a set schedule so everyone in the neighborhood knows to avoid those streets for two hours on tuesday or whatever. Caring assholery

It's illuminating when people use terms coined as anti-black dogwhistles as legitimate language of cultural critique ("cancel culture," ironic uses of "woke," "cancel," and other AAVE terms). There's zero daylight between the coinage of those usages and terms like "SJW" or "snowflake" The phrase "cancel culture" came straight from the fox news-ish sphere of fascist influence to dismiss black critiques of fascism, and it spread from there to other racist or credulous whites.

It doesn't make it any better that people "don't know" that the words they're using are anti-black dogwhistles. That only means that the media environment they engage in is pervasively anti-black, but they don't have the political consciousness to inure themselves against racist propagandizing. Obviously that doesn't make it feel any better. I don't feel safe around people who uncritically absorb ideas adjacent to shitheads who despise black people, even if it's unintended.

Pretty fuckin interesting reading this chapter about gender in Yoruba culture. A lot of the debate about the sexual aspects of religious practice are between scholars who don't give a shit about "westerners" and super colonized scholars who seek to try to represent Yoruba culture in a way that's palatable to the colonizer gaze.

The whitewashed scholars try to minimize the importance of sex to Yoruba religious practice and call it "undignified" to assert that sex was central (an attitude which seems like a colonial incursion). The whitewashed scholars also heavily downplay the gender-bendy aspects of Yoruba priesthood (or at least they did in 2001).This has me thinking about how crucial it is to escape the colonizer gaze, or it'll warp your self-concept

This scholar (Matory) is like...uhh, I visited a community for months, and there are pretty clearly trans priestesses, the priestesses flirted with people all the time, I witnessed "many a ribald dance" from the priesthood, and celebrating sex is central to the function of the priesthood...so...

Then Matory talks about the limitations of using "western" anglophone terms around Yoruba sexuality and gender in the first place. That's enough reading, this is complicated :blobcatgoogly:

Can't stop thinking about how a journalist who studied a spiritual tradition associated with the Yoruba diaspora in Brazil noticed the trans priestesses, and in 1947 he said of them "sometimes, they are much better looking than the [cis] women."I'm like, yeah ofc...but also like. Dude. You didn't have to like, rate or otherwise objectify the priestesses for your article. Damn.

If the DSM ever knew what it was talking about, it'd have "selects clothes by picking up already worn clothes off the floor and giving it the smell test instead of getting a fresh shirt from the dresser" as a telltale symptom of depression
