email is interesting because while email is pretty broken and just very bad and dated i think anything that could replace email would be unambiguously worse

At its peak in the 1980s, the Rax chain had grown to 504 locations in 38 states along with an unknown number of restaurants in Guatemala.[8]

it's so weird to see instances shutting down that feel like they've been around forever

i find "computers should just be good which means you dont need to know anything to use them" to just be a really individualistic standpoint.not that computers couldn't or shouldn't be better but wishing for liberation from the material reality that all data lives on a computer somewhere sucks. you either get a computer that's constantly trying to get into your wallet or a computer that requires you to deal with the real people making it work. those are your only two options.

it feels kind of emblematic of the state of technology that the answer to "i want to take a 10x zoom picture with my 1mm wide lens smartphone camera but its too blurry :(" is "here's what our ai model thinks it should look like :)" instead of "sorry that's physically impossible"

i got my start programming by being a space station 13 maintainer at 14 years old (lmao) and its made me incredibly fascinated by the like. Sociology of open source video games. things like SS13, Cataclysm, and Minecraft modding, which is not technically open source but practically speaking its in the category. So I guess its not really open source but more like highly community-driven development? It's pretty clear to me that this kind of very open-ended development environment produces very different games from the traditional "professional" gamedev process, just like indie games are very different from big studio games. It's very very interesting to me how there's a kind of community-driven gradual exploration of the genre that occurs with these games. A modpack like Gregtech New Horizons is the culmination of almost 15 years of tech modding, inspiring an entire new subgenre along the way.And where we usually take a pretty auteurial perspective on the history of video games I feel it's not really the case here. Of course Minecraft modding has its auteurs, GregoriusT and Azanor and many others, but the modded Minecraft experience is also fundamentally modpacks and tweaks and addons.

look im not really up to date on the open source music player meta but the subsonic protocol being the only real protocol in the space feels like it's holding back everything massively

and of course "just make a new protocol" is rarely a solution but it feels like anything using subsonic just ends up being pretty janky
