Hey #fediverse, does anyone reading this have any experience running their website from home? Like maybe on a Rasberry Pi or some similar, low power device. I'd be curious about your experiences and recommendations.I have a few static websites that I run on a VPS so nothing complicated at all.

I haven't lamented lately about the state of search engines. What are y'all using these days? I'm still using #brave, though I'm not totally stoked about it. It's fine I guess. Seems to generally find things I'm looking for. The org is heavy into all the cryptocurrency blockchain stuff so that's a bummer.At work I use Bing and Google as a fall back.Has anyone heard of any efforts for an open source type situation? Is #Mojeek any better?

Y'all, I had to uninstall #Factorio. I get tooooo obsessed with it. My base runs 1350 spm and it ran at that speed for a couple hours last night so that's good enough for me, for now.At some point, I'll circle back around to improve the layout and design of a few of the factories but good grief, I have to live my life for a while.

@Joe i'm a disciple of nilaus so bus to launch the first rocket but I really love train megabases. for me, it basically becomes a train logistics simulator.

I am aware that calibre has some drm removal tools but those don't all work on on Linux. You need a specific version of a cert that's only installed with a certain version of Amazon reader for windows. I tried pretty hard to make it work

@voidspace I dont recall now as it was last year that I was trying to make it work. I was trying the main ones you find when you search the internet about it.Looks like I may need to circle back around and try it. Looks like there have been some updates since then.Have you made it work on Linux? Are you able to de-drm amazon and kobo (adobe drm?)?

This really really annoys me. Look. I pay for the books. Authors deserve to be paid and I *want* to pay them. I just reallllly hate to be locked into a book publishing ecosystem. I want to buy a book then read it on whatever device I damn well please. I don't want to be required to have a kobo or amazon account or sign into my ereader with an account. I want to download the book I paid for, transfer it to my device with a cable and then read it. My ereader should be publisher agnostic. 😡

Project Hail Mary is a great book but it has DRM. I paid the full retail price from kobo then downloaded it from z-library.org so I can have it in my library without drm.

I remember when Amazon was the disruptor and it allowed small authors to self publish. William C Dietz is an author I follow and he self publishes on Amazon. Now Amazon is evil because I was just looking at his books on Amazon and it doesn't even seem possible to get the book in digital format without being subscribed to Amazon Unlimited. I hate this timeline.

@Eggfreckles yeah man thanks. the music files stuff is pretty straight forward but the playlist thing seems difficult. I know technically it should be simply but finding two pieces of software that both will automatically read the playlist seems difficult.@wouter uses #Navidrome to stream local music and sync playlists and all that so I'm going to give that a whirl. I ordered an Intel nuc to run home assisant on so there's plenty of cpu on that machine to also run this.

@Eggfreckles I was trying to avoid the complexity of hosting an app to "stream" my own music over my own local network. I don't want a local version of spotify. I want to plug a cable from my phone to my computer and sync music and playlists. no one thinks like it seems.

Help me choose a name for a sub domain. First thought was mastodon.obsolete29.com but maybe social.obsolete29.com is better because that gives me the option of changing to other platforms in the future.
