@freemoWhat is their criteria? Them: "I can't see them with my eyes..."Me: "Well, you can't see oxygen either, but here you are taking too much of it."

@freemoI largely agree based on proposed policies, but I think Biden is more likely to defer to evidence and people who know their fields instead of eliminating scientists every chance he gets like Trump is doing now.

It's times like those that I start regretting even saying something. I grow weary of teaching high school science to people that should know better.

@MutoShackDo these books focus on any certain language? I'm not a programmer, but want to start volunteering with an open source project. I've heard of TAOCP, but what is SICP?What language do you feel a programming newbie should tackle first?@freemo

@freemoMy recent background is in life sciences. Do you feel a background in math is critical for understanding in computer science? Would these books be out of reach if I haven't had a college math course in a number of years? It's been a while...@MutoShack

@freemoGood feedback, thanks! Maybe I'll have to refresh my math on Khan Academy or something. I'm almost afraid to see how much I've completely forgotten. It's not so much I don't have the foundation. I made it through Calculus 2, but I haven't used it in 15ish years after a career change from computers to healthcare. I suppose you could say I'm a little... behind the curve when it comes to math 🤣I'd like to consider myself somewhat logically inclined, but it's all relative to whom I compare it. Maybe I'll order the books, and if they're way out of my league (quite possible) set them down while I refresh/increase my math skills. I wish I found learning math as fun as what those skills can eventually be used to create.@MutoShack

@drewfer Yeah, I looked at some of TAOCP, I'd definitely agree, it appears to be a fairly challenging read for someone new to programming. I'm seeing a couple books targeting math for CS, which might be a better option since it's targeted toward's my intended future use. Based on your comment, do you feel someone new to the field would be wise to start with a computer math book (Concrete Mathematics), then move to SCIP, and then finally tackle TAOCP? It just seems like a lot of reading/study before studying the languages that are predominantly used today, but I do understand the need for a solid foundation.Thanks!@MutoShack @freemo

@freemo ...I could use demonstrations of underrated computer science concepts - not sure if video is the best platform, but throwing it out there :)

@freemo I think it would be helpful to new programmers, I'm obviously not at the point where I'm writing code yet, but the things I could see myself struggling with is how to organize code for larger projects so it's more easily maintainable.

@freemo Thought you might be interested - I just finished the first two videos of the Stanford University course Introduction to Mathematical Thinking by Keith Devlin. It's surprisingly interesting from my non-math perspective. The course tries to bridge the gap between K-12 rote math and "real world" math and calculations. I'm not far into the course yet, but so far, I'm finding it interesting.... which means it's likely WAAAY too basic for you, but I am coming from a place where I use to have a disdain for math.

@design_RG It's a free course on Coursera: https://www.coursera.org/learn/mathematical-thinkingIt looks like the next start date is June 22nd. Once you enroll though, you should have access to all the content. The "due" dates are just if you'd like to follow along with the rest of the class.Again, it might be too high level for a lot of people, but for those of us who struggle with math (i.e., me), it seems like a good transition to START the transition to higher levels of math (which still provokes a bit of anxiety, if I'm being honest). The PDFs they recommend reading prior to the first lesson are provided, and started untangling the gooblygook that is (apparently) set theory symbolism and stuff. I feel like those 2 documents alone can help take some of the math symbolism anxiety away and turn it into something that can be broken down and understood.

@freemoNot that they'd get there in time anyway. Never count on the police to stop a violent crime I'm progress. They're useless for THAT purpose.

@freemoIf you desire a good blend of feature-packed and highly secure (hardware-based tokens) I've found only one choice: Charles Schwab.Charles Schwab is the only US bank I could find that has an option for a hardware token for 2FA, and once you set it up, it removes SMS-based authentication as an option (this is good for my security values).Switching SMS 2FA for a hardware token means you're no longer as vulnerable to SIM swap attacks.(You have to call tech support to order a security token fob, and they'll overnight it to you for free.)
