@CharredStencil @KitsuneAlicia I made a 2.5 rail shooter with software rendering that runs at 20FPS on my 2009-vintage Atom, and at 40FPS on mom's Athlon from the same era. The kicker? It's made in pure *Python*, a notoriously slow language. A straight port to Love2D is 50% faster, with no other optimizations.

"Empirically, the 3D graphics industry has homogenized since 1996 and stranded SimCopter outside the pale of rendering convention. Fewer development houses write their own renderers. Unreal, CryEngine, and Unity all offer similar features based on the same academic research. SIGGRAPH attendance has declined since New Orleans ‘96. These factors combine to give SimCopter a one-of-a-kind graphical style." -- http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/simcity2000landandair/simcity2000landandair.htm (cc @WagonStar)

So, I hear the maintainers of #Tusky, my #Mastodon client of choice, have chosen to take responsibility for how their software is being used. Good! Let this be the start of a new era in free software.

Sure, from a technical standpoint, hardcoding a blacklist in a network client is inelegant. Internet domains change hands or cease to exist all the time, you get stuck with outdated code, and you won't be around forever to maintain it. But that's just a way of saying *technology exists in a sociocultural context*. It's not some eternal marble hall.

@maloki After the recent events, free software can never again pretend to be apolitical. As if it ever could. Freedom is a political concept by definition.

Would you believe it, I've read Thinking #Forth but not Starting Forth because I had no idea the latter was also free online? Now I can finally correct this grievous omission.

Working on my game is starting to drive me crazy: a major red flag. Good thing I'm about to wrap things up.

@timkrief If we don't post on Mastodon because "nobody uses it", that becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. If we don't interact with others, we're easily forgotten. Have we grown so used to artificially induced "engagement" that we don't know what to do without?

@entreprecariat I was discussing the full quote with a friend, and came to a conclusion that shouldn't be surprising: "kindness appears to be the most advanced tech of all".

Time and again people need reminding that "cheating" in a single-player game is a nonsensical notion, that DRM doesn't work and it's a bad idea anyway: https://intfiction.org/t/how-to-prevent-people-from-downloading-the-game/57203

Second time I run into a developer on itch.io who doesn't know what a #web server is and thinks they need to code a #NodeJS app to serve static files. This is terrifying. It's the future Google wants to build, with their HTTP 2.0 and Wasm: a future when even the basics are horribly hard and not even developers know how the web works because it's all a black box.I'm begging you: fight this. Educate people. Don't let openness die.

@campbell They want it to be true for the same reason other people believe in God: because you can reason with a clock maker. You can bribe him. Climate change just kills you. Can't take back what you've done to the planet. Can't ask for more time.

"The indie boom was heralded as the “indiepocalypse” because, to win, there needs to be an artificial scarcity." Stunning insight from Nathalie Lawhead, that applies to much more than #videogames: http://www.nathalielawhead.com/candybox/conversations-about-curation-and-the-future-of-games-crit-reflecting-on-this-years-a-maze

Is it just me, or does #XMPP survive mostly as a French thing? Suits me fine. Just curious.
