Hi! I'm Nora Tindall, moving from @tindall. I've been on the Fediverse since January 2017, and I've made lots of friends here. It's got its problems, but I really enjoy it.I'm a software engineer by trade, and I spend a lot of time thinking about things like computing culture, building accessible programming environments, and computer art.I'm also an electronic musician, a pagan, a radio amateur, an anarchist, and queer.Thank you for welcoming me here! #introductions

funny to realize that the mpx vaccine I'm about to receive is, basically, the original vaccine, to the extent that the virus in use is called "vaccinia"

Had a good convo about this on Twitter, and to be specific, I think it's evil to: a) build a centralized, closed, network-effect based service which b) is accompanied with a marketing campaign designed to move people away from existing services and c) requires the use of a client with significant stability, efficiency, and accessibility issues which you ...

       d) ignore bug reports for and e) not only in policy but in fact ban people for replacing with their own clients that better serve their needs, which do not in fact cause spam or reliability problems for your services (and certainly not more than your own client). All this, in addition to absolutely sucking the air out of the room for other services, is a negative for the world. (e.g. Discord gets $1b, Matrix $50m)

But at the same time, discord is obviously important to a lot of people. It's important to me! I just think we deserve better, and Discord as a company is actively making it impossible for us to get that.

folks have raised the point that "discord is better than nothing" and i suppose that's true but we didn't have nothing before discord and we wouldn't have nothing without discord

Looks like Gitea might be turning to cryptocurrency nonsense in the near future."To preserve the community aspect of Gitea we are experimenting with creating a decentralized autonomous organization where contributors would receive benefits based on their participation such as from code, documentation, translations, and perhaps even assisting individual community members with support questions."https://blog.gitea.io/2022/10/open-source-sustainment-and-the-future-of-gitea/

So I figured I’d look into what all Cohost’s webapp entails. This is a bit of a long thread, full of links to copies of what my personal browser receives from their site at this point in time. Strap in!

i think some of the disconnect around the fediverse / mastodon is because people want Twitter but Differentto me, this has always been a place to build a community in a space that's smaller and cozier

Fedi server that, upon attempting to make a public ( 🌐 ) post, prompts you with the old USENET text:"This program posts news to thousands of machines throughout the entire populated world. Your message will cost the network hundreds if not thousands of dollars to send everywhere. Please be sure you know what you are doing."

Actually, for those who don't know, USENET is not just the first federated social network, but the first scrappy open-protocol clone of a proprietary one, too. It was started by university undergrads as a kind of pirate version of ARPANET with spare computer time and stolen bandwidth at universities that couldn't afford access.

there are two options when it comes to open protocols for social media: implement them, or insist that anyone who cares about what you have to say join a community chosen by you, using software picked by you
