I cut my teeth on open source, and it's a major reason why I've made it to where it have so far. But as I've been working in 100+ employee companies, so much effort is often focused on transferring risk. Using open source projects for operations requires internal maintainers, so the orgs I've worked for want to instead buy a SaaS from a vendor. It used to bother me, but now I'm of the opinion that it's a necessary part of the ecosystem purely for risk transfer needs. Feeling conflicted.

One case I have in mind is dependency-track. The cost of the commercial solutions (Snyk, BlackDuck, etc) seems nuts for what the tools are. And more competitors are coming up if you lock into Azure DevOps or GitHub. So dependency-track could be a great tool, but it's on the fringes and maintaining the install really doesn't make sense for a lot of orgs. So you need to be an evangelist to force its use instead of buying something.

This bothers me because dependency management really is a problem that we should be able to solve in most cases, so is ideal for an open source project and open protocols. But, instead, it has become a paid tool where each company is competing to build the exact same thing (or use open source behind the scenes without contributing to the project). I feel like there's an opportunity here.

@musicman @strypey American here who moved to Auckland in 2019. How long will you be here? Auckland is very multicultural, whereas Northland to the north and King Country to the south, by contrast, are more Pakeha (NZ European) and Maori. (Just for relevance as you listen to HANZ). We've visited a bit of both islands so might be able to provide some ideas

@musicman @strypey If it's just two overnights, it all depends on the timing. Auckland goes to bed pretty early, but you could come into the CBD, walk on the waterfront and get some food. One thing very different from the US is that there are a lot of really good little takeaway restaurants, and fish and chips is fantastic and really cheap. There are good meat pies in every little bakery too.

@musicman @strypey If you're here for a few days, look at Waitangi Treaty Grounds, glow worm caves in King Country, Waiheke island, hiking, Tiritiri Matangi island, black sand beaches west of Auckland.

@AnthonyJK @BendingUnit @pluralistic @ycwang Permanent Residency isn't permanent anymore. One thing they've been doing for years (since the late 90's by the state department I believe, but really ramped up in the last decade with DHS) is to unilaterally take away permanent residency from people if they want to exile you, and will use any pretense they can find. Caught smoking pot by the cops? Even if the judge dismissed the case, if it shows up on your record DHS will revoke your permanent residency and "deport" you without any way to fight it.
