@adham how large do your quarterly files get?

@anders not obsidian, but this sounds like capture templates on emacs org-mode.

@oatmeal @Xuxxux I suppose that clearing and re-syncing the db wasn't the fix? I am still on Emacs 28.1, I really hope to not have a bunch of issues when I try to jump to 29.

@fox I like org-roam. I don't find it particularly heavy or complex. Yes it uses sqlite to store metadata, but if you have a large corpus of notes, it sure seems a reasonable path. I really like how it's capture templates can initialize a file and isn't limited to initializing the outline path like regular capture.

@fox my notes are my primary workspace. I have a daily worklog that I create new entries in for whatever I'm working on, and often I do much of the work right there with babel. Having it be my central hub means I rarely forget to take notes. Tasks on the other hand, I don't have an overall system for. Someday agenda will take hold. Next time I dive in I'll probably be looking to use org-roam-db-query to derive the files containing todo entries as the list of agenda files.

@fox yeah, it's a muscle that takes some time and practice to develop. If your writing code in Emacs too, org-rich-yank is really useful for grabbing code snippets into your notes with link back to the source, making it easy to return.

@fox I've been nudging this post about how I'm using org-mode along. It's sort of a mess, but a few people have told me they found it useful.https://cmdln.org/2023/03/25/how-i-org-in-2023/I'll keep nudging it along and plan to fork it next year.#emacs #orgmode #pkm

@fox yeah, you can find it here https://github.com/alphapapa/org-web-toolsI don't know about using it to take notes on webpages. I use it to convert webpages into org-mode for historical reference with org-web-tools-insert-web-page-as-entry. It has an archive feature org-web-tools-archive-attach to store the rendered version, but I don't use it, I think last I tried it wasn't working for me.But you certainly could take notes and archive the webpage as an attachment.

@punko @dapprvilln @Pantsu I use emacs org-mode with evil-mode. With org-babel it's really powerful for executable documentation with the ability to mix and match languages and then export to markdown, html, or whatever for stuffing into other systems. Not to mention all the gtd task management and pkm capabilities even before looking at packages like org-roam. Plus then your inside emacs, so you can read email and use Magit and and and#emacs #orgmode #pkm

@worldsendless @freemo isn't it based on node ID? Pretty sure I've configured it before to be based file title. I guess I don't find the ID based organization weird, but all of my org interlinking has been ID based for years already.

@worldsendless @freemo I guess I don't see it as an external concept. I called it node because that's the terminology used by org-roam for a note with an ID.FWIW, mostly I have attachments go to a single directory organized under the ID but for some files I set the DIR property to a relative path and then new attachments are stored there./For example:#+property: DIR attachments/how-i-org-in-2023/so those attachments are stored relative to that file.

@mms I jump to the headline for where I want to export, narrow to subtree and then export.

Currently I have 64MB of .org files in ~/org. That's 5606 files and 1331083 lines of text, the largest single file is 1.4MB and the longest lined file has 26370 lines. 5580 are inside org-roam, 4080 of those are "dailies". 17181 "nodes" in total. 61828 headlines. 178 files contain 653 TODO and 4950 DONE entries. 89872 git commits in the last year.#Emacs #OrgMode #OrgRoam #OrgRoamUi #pkm

@10leej Pictures and sounds and stuff I guess? I use attachements and stuff, but not to that degree. My ~/org-attachments directory is only ~1G.

@publicvoit I've had Linux running on a n old Surface tablet, and an old surface book 2. Not an awesome experience. Beyond the fiddly getting working. I don't like to use pens on big sreens very much (I do like it on my phone). My wife has an old yoga 910 and it's still great, I'm not sure about multi touch I'll have to try it later. Tent mode has worked, but unsure of status she doesn't do that very often. All of these had Ubuntu.

@publicvoit this yoga 910 has been a solid performer for years. My wife still loves it. Just replaced the battery last year and that was a major quality of life improvement for her.
