@textfiles @harrymccracken, you might appreciate this! I miss the cassette players that were somehow barely bigger than the tapes they played.

@TraRay What things does one consider/look for when regarding which areas aren't optimal for pasture?

@ZachWeinersmith I've heard that watching children's TV shows in the language you're trying to learn is a great way to do it. They tend to speak more slowly, enunciate more clearly, and use a more basic vocabulary and grammar structure.

@futurebird A big thing I've not seen anyone talk about is how back in the day, a person could work at one company for their entire career. That stability enabled people to consider "putting down roots" and buying a house they'd live in for fifty years.Jobs would give people real raises every year (not just cost of living increases) to retain experienced employees. These days you have to jump from job to job (and move) to get any kind of raise. Buying makes less sense.

@ZachWeinersmith I think that it could have been a bit more intentional than that.At the heart of these stories is a constant jabbing at the vapid and worthless ruling class, that by accident of birth (not merit), have all the wealth and power. Thus the childlike, simple portrayal is part of the parody and critique. These characters are intended to lack complexity and depth.

@ZachWeinersmith Interesting! It's curious how easy and natural it feels to read my own cultural leanings into it.

@ZachWeinersmith Older media can be shockingly cringey these days, even some classics. I recently read Vonnegut's "Cat's Cradle" for the first time and was taken aback at his treatment of certain groups (even though he was obviously trying to be "kind" for that era in which it was written).

@aral There's a known pattern of valedictorians and salutatorians "not being successful" in the terms of not ending up as executives, lawyers, being wealthy, etc.I'm thinking we're successful at being satisfied in life and loving those around us and the executives and lawyers have failed. Never having enough seems like a huge flaw and a foundational fallacy.Frank Capra's insight and wisdom about what makes good, admirable humans should be core lessons to us all.
