@ShamarI'm saying you should be employed by the public to produce exactly the software you just went on to describe later in your post. Also, sharing photos, chatting and learning are not exclusively separate. You can do all 3 at once.@freakazoid @LibertyPaulM @HerraBRE

@sirWin people to the politics concretely: make good shit and it will speak for itself. This is a valuable lesson for FOSS to internalize.

@xj9There's also very little infrastructure to support a non-capitalist web. Without public space to guarantee an internet commons, the easiest way to support a website is with ads.@dgold

@jalcineFor me this is why free software will never take off in the way it needs to to until there are coders organizing to make paid code they write for tech companies free as in freedom in the first place. There's too much personal sacrifice to be sustainable and not enough exploitation potential for companies to get behind it when they can profit from being assholes.

@jalcineI feel like it speaks the fact that at some point centralization will need to happen to maintain certain levels of quality and safety, but that centralization needs to be democratically rooted

@frickhaditcoming @bob The most frustrating part about that is how the very free software movement that created the software didn't understand that and sees no incompatibility between FOSS and capitalism. Still exists today but not as much

@frickhaditcoming @bob I know lol, I've done some digging. But to me it reflects the difference between the days when an individual Dev could code an entire project by themselves because the ability to understand a whole system was more possible than today. Now that tech is more complex it requires a collective workforce to maintain, and by extension fight for politically. When we see some tech organizing in full swing I think we'll see a rebirth in FOSS

I feel like the tech instances are cool but I don't have much sense of community and the political instances are cool because people "get it" but often mildly insufferable, because I get it you know how to read political booksMy main question is how do I find a healthy, motivating community to be a part of?None of the online spaces other than facebook are places where I even feel like having conversations means anything or will go anywhere so when I do post it's just depressive pessimistic shit

@ScottMortimer even in the federated feed I have a hard time finding engaging communities. Maybe I just need to follow the right people or maybe the feed format just doesn't really help you build relationships without other tools to facilitate that.

"I'm sure you're well qualified at whatever you do but I can 100% guarantee you that you are not more specialized than a mechanical or electrical engineer. I was a business major so I can say without bias that STEM degrees are without a doubt the most specialized fields and they're lucrative because of it"Hahaha oh man, business majors... amirite laaaaydies?

@sillystring i'm among the insufferable political types, but I think I might just need to figure out a good project to get involved in, regardless of the fediverse. I dunno, what i'm looking for admittedly either though

What we need is search engines so easy to self-host that we can overcome the influence money & state have on Google, et al.Like searx but less of a pain in the ass to install.

@xj9We know that crisis is imminent (recession/depression), but anyone who thinks they have a timeline for the complete collapse of capitalism is applying way to much logic (if a happens b will follow) to a dialectical situation (when a happens b will depend on our reaction to it)@socalledunitedstates

@xj9 @socalledunitedstatesWell, hell. It's arguable we're in a crisis right now, but I'm referring to it getting worse anyway.
