@simon I remember that many factors blocked them becoming useful Most websites were desktop only. This was still the era of using PNGs for headers if you wanted a different fontIn San Francisco there was no carrier that had acceptable bandwidth for mobile web, and didn’t until maybe 2010. Our office bought these devices to enhance cellular signal

The best advice I got about Mastodon is that it’s for things you love, not hate

Thanks to @kasdeya for posting this highly memeable photo of an old computer book. But I wondered: which book?I figured out it's from "The Internet Guide for New Users" by Daniel P. Dern, 1994. The illustrator, Hannah M. G. Shapero, has been involved with technology and art for a very long time. Here she is doing some early electronic music, and appropriately looking like she is going to bring us all into the futureShe has a few blogs; this was last updated in 2021. https://pyracanthasketch.blogspot.com/

@clive Washington Post circa 2030: we stand opposed to forced labor camps for children that build rolling coal kits. We call on Marjorie Taylor Greene to return to her roots in the Save The Children movement.

@simon Friction is underrated. The difference between being a legendarily productive developer, and just an average one, is completing just a few more things per day.

Tradition is a wonderful thing. Looking forward to this generation of protesters learning that their campus administrators, the cops, and almost all of the media are going to shamelessly lie about them

Sometimes I say that email is effectively centralized and “hackers” are outraged. They insist that anyone, anyone, could just set up a personal mail transport agent at any time. And of course they’d do it themselves if they ever needed to! Just, not now. Some people are saying this in good faith but with outdated knowledge - this hasn’t been practical since the mid 00shttps://akademienl.social/@meliimming/113113051813419161

For Americans who want to know what it’s like to be Canadian right now. Mostly everyone goes about their business, but there are signsMy barber took down his framed photo of Wayne Gretzky celebrating one of his first legendary record-breaking runs. (Gretzky has lived in LA for decades, and is a proud MAGA guy now).Every grocery store has signs and symbols showing you what items are Canadian. You might see a display of Chinese oranges you’ve never seen before, labelled “not American!”

@interfluidity @llimllib 100% thisStupid: Navarro is basically RFK Jr but for the economy. Malice: I believe that Trump has an instinctive affinity for anything that allows him to unpredictably harm people in his own circle of influence.

@interfluidity For real I have thought about this. A guy I know tried it may years ago but you need sustained attention to tracking someone’s every utterance. Maybe LLMs could do it?

@feoh This is an awful situation but just to clarify some thingsIt's not technically required to give the company that much power over your personal iOS devices. They could have asserted much less control and still been secure.I have worked for a financial institution where I brought my own iOS device. When I was offboarded, they could wipe only apps associated with the company. I had to reinstall my Gmail for personal use and re-login, but was otherwise fine.

The recent dump of Jeffery Epstein emails proves a surprising thing: it is still possible, in 2025, to have secrets.

@rysiek @delta Your heart may be in the right place here but I beg you to retitle this. It is misleading to call this a “Signal contingency plan”. A proper “Signal contingency plan” would be an outline for how to make my own assessments of my organization’s needs, and then maybe some fallback tools and their various strengths and weaknesses. You are only presenting a kind of Delta advertisement here.
