Random Canadian reservists get 6x as much training in this exercise as those poor #Russia mobiks before they go off to serve as "cannon meat".We say "cannon fodder", the Russians I know explicitly say it's "cannon meat".So many young men dead for one old man's delusions of grandeur. But this is how it's always been with our species, no?

I'm anti-war.Bush's adventure in Iraq was just that - an imperial adventure, a disastrous war of choice started with lies. What #Russia is doing in #Ukraine is awful, but Biden and the rest of the NATO country leaders are standing behind Zelenskyy, who is facing a war of necessity. We didn't start this, so I've begun to wonder why we're being so dainty about ending it. The F-16 will look good in blue and gray with some gold accents.

@CyclingJourno @Remittancegirl @cstross Yeah, and now those same clowns are the ones pushing the #Nuremberg 2.0 nonsense. It's the mystery of our age - how people that would have been street mumblers outside fast food restaurants twenty years ago ended up in charge of defining reality.

@cstross @CyclingJourno @Remittancegirl Having lived in D.C., I'm fond of that particular genre of performance art. You will get the weirdest policy prescriptions from those guys. It's like ... they have lucid periods, they read the newspaper, and then they get excitable and you get this sort of General Accounting Office tinged word salad diatribe.

@Remittancegirl @cstross @CyclingJourno Given that earlier reference to Simulacra & Simulation's Five Stages ... I'm not even sure how we're gonna be able to define psychotic between now and the eventual grid collapse that will truly free us ... at least the ones who survive.

@Remittancegirl @cstross @CyclingJourno There's this thing called Olduvai Theory - the notion that technological societies with 24x7 grid electricity are a single event transient pulse. This ... it troubles me. I'm at the age where people with my genes start dying, but even so I'm ... attached to the idea that our species is going to progress.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olduvai_theory

@cstross @Remittancegirl @CyclingJourno We could have climbed back down to 1942, if we'd been willing to see things as they are. I suspect Mother Nature is going to knock us straight back to 1492.The energy inputs are one thing, the mineral inputs bug me. This foolishness with battery powered cars, for example. Count existing gas cars ... total up lithium reserves ... and you get a big fat NOPE.We will eventually start making longer term plans, but what will be left to use for them?

@cstross @Remittancegirl @CyclingJourno Years ago the peak oil guys donated conference proceeds to the Millennium Institute for a Threshold 21 model of trains/bikes in the U.S.Oil use would drop 38%, economy would grow by 25% ... but it bankrupts Social Security in its current form - walkers/bikers live longer 🙂 I'm digging for the link to it, this was back in 2007 I think ...

#Sympawnies isn't on the Fediverse as far as I know. Each short composition looks like a line drawing of an animal, but it's a playable piece of music. #CatsOfMastodon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zECqpwghQOs

@rudyschwartz @onan As long as you can manage gluten free with vegan cheese, I too would enjoy a grilled cheese sandwich.

The oldest backup I have of my Twitter observation system is from August of 2013. Today I deleted two of my four apps to qualify for the $100/month Basic plan.I'm not sure on the math, but what I saw gets me the amount of data I currently use in three or four minutes. It's #ElonMusk's system, he can do as he pleases with it.

But the removal of journalists while restoring extremist assclowns? And now ensuring that no academic or NGO can afford to see what is happening?I think #ElonMusk believes that Twitter defines reality, and that he can apply equal measures of free speech absolutism and oligarchs uber alles, making reality what he wants it to be.Who here thinks things are going to play out that way? Certainly not me.

There's been discussion on how much VPN I would need to scape and get stuff. Twitter has been a rich data source, but only a job for a year out of that decade. I don't see any reason to spend hundreds of hours fucking around with scrape methods .... in order to just cover my hosting costs.Streams already stopped working. When the other access gives out, I may register some new socks to squat my name, and delete my original accounts.

I always have *something* new cooking, that notional back burner on the stove contains some new software stack, it's just ... a curious habit. But now I have to look back through what's been through there, maybe see what to do now that I'm getting back processing capability.I was already going from a cabinet to a single 1U server.

I've been looking at all the news on Large Language Models and watching stuff on YouTube, getting up to speed. The Nvidia GTX 1060 I've never really utilized got exercised this month and it's like me, old and tired.Tensor cores today are like Intel CPUs in the 1980s. Each generation brings enormous change in capabilities and caching. The RTX 4090 is both the top of the line AND the minimum to get.

1st generation Tensor cores were datacenter only. Since then there's been a progression:2nd gen - RTX 20x03rd gen - RTX 30x04th gen - RTX 40x02nd gen are archaic. Prices on 3rd to 4th gen cards differ little, but the core capability changes dramatically.Someone gave me a complex puzzle earlier this month. If they want me in April, I think I need that RTX 4090.

I could put the RTX 4090 in my desktop, but busy GPUs are loud and this place is tiny.My rackmounts are all 1U systems. I'm not even sure that card would work in a 2U Dell R720. I can't get into a newer generation, I've got piles of 32GB DIMMs.A Dell R820? A 2U quad processor box with processing power equal to my entire 1U fleet.Maybe I need ear muffs while I hunt for a workable revenue model ...

Maybe Vast is the way.https://vast.ai/hostingHost GPUs, plow any profits into expansion, get to a point where I can have a pair of R820s so I can keep my current data mirroring scheme in play. One stumble sticks me with a cabinet I can't afford and machines that we be utterly intolerable if I had to move them here.Decisions, decisions ...
