I genuinely can't remember if I ever did that thread I was thinking of about why choosing magic tricks as the theme for all your computers' hostnames doesn't actually work....

@penguin42 Weirdly enough, when you pull a card out of a computer without looking, people don't applaud even if reappears in their pocket.

#blog #recommendation #request #rssI'm looking for a recommendation (or lots) for feeds to follow to stay up-to-date on news from the mobile-device / Android community. Including, ideally including all the aftermarket & indie stuff.I used to subscribe to the XDA Dev feeds for a lot of that, but they've been broken for 8+ months & clearly aren't getting fixed.

May be worth adding that I currently subscribe to 618 blog feeds in my home tt-rss instance, so the odds are that "general tech news" suggestions are already in there. As are many standalone community projects, if they *have* a news feed (not all do; ahem F-Droid....)No I don't read all the articles from all 618 every day (a lot are noisy or there for safety), but I do look at the headlines on all pretty regularly and dip in as much as I can.

Weird question, but is anybody in my reach on Mastodon a native-speaker of Oceanic languages?(that's Hawaiian, Samoan, Fijian, related or nearby Polynesian/Micronesian languages, which I say to clarify the question for other people in the middle who might be forwarding it, not because anyone who speaks one will need the clarification)This is not for anything big; I'm just trying to get some POV about how folks refer to the alphabet & diacritic marks.

Obviously I'm all for code-pub, but I think work needs to be done to normalize publishing the messy/incomplete/piecemeal nature of research software. If you're like me (sorry), you barely have time to get it running once, it looks spaghettirific, and you didn't get to plan it from day one with a requirements doc. That makes folk reluctant to release; the reception from the software world is often critical (or it's feared to be).https://fediscience.org/@petersuber/110918041321108927(h/t to @mlinksva for the timelineboost)

e.g., probably 80% of the time I asked a FOSS-component-related question on a forum or mailing list, the first responses (or if not the first, extra loud ones) were people telling me my approach was wrong and/or I didn't actually need to do what I thought I wanted to. That being in reference to some application-driven development model / goal. But research often requires poking at things that are oblique / not well-modeled / not-routine. All sorts of "that's not what this library is for" stuff.

@liw @mlinksva Good points.I have nowhere near to any solutions to offer, of course. Perhaps face-to-face consulting/assistance at the university/institution level would be highest impact, but that sounds quite difficult.

*Sidenote, before North America wakes up: I do want to clarify that the experiences alluded to only account for situations where I was an outsider with a "how to" question.Where I engaged with teams and individuals I already knew (& vice-versa), it's not like that, even though they couldn't always refer me to an easy solution. But of course everybody's an outsider somewhere. And feature requests are a bit different, too. But I often got "Nobody needs that because libfoo is for something else"

The other angle, of course, is that "software written for an academic reason" may also have to be tailored for being read by non-programmers, such as subject-matter experts. It's a lot clearer to follow linear code chunks in an appendix than something that's highly modular or optimized for OOPyness, and that might make a big difference when you need to show a finding to a community that doesn't have the time to learn a bunch of unfamiliar frameworks when they review what you've written./eof

@mjg59 Are you asking about real-time or on-demand?I poked at that a tad (w.r.t. the Thames and the local stairs down to the shore) ~1.55 years ago for Home Assistant, although I don't know how much note-taking I did.

Silly question but if anybody I know has connections with #Xorg ... is there somewhere that old, pre-X.org mailing lists (from the X11 / XFree86 / X Consortium days) are still archived?#boostswelcome

@penguin42 Late-80s / early 90s ingest of fonts from commercial vendors; typically they were all donations to, say, Ghostscript or whatever under a singleton grant/license (because nothing more rigorous existed yet), but often the original conversations are lost to the fog of time. And to the linkrot of time, such as archives being hosted on some .edu third-level domain with the ~ of a valiant lab staffer in the URL who moved on decades ago. #LinkArchaeology

Intel labels its processors with a combination of meaningless brand names like "Celeron" & "Core" and meaningless internal codenames like "Kirby Lake" & "Sandy Sky", the latter of which I think come from the place names of parking lots and alleyways near to the corporate headquarters building (? unclear).Having two schemes is an extra-great system because every online support forum & blog is free to choose a third designation, like "15th generation", and use that instead.#communicationing

Other fun things you can carry in your pocket at all times, just to ensure you get on the news if you accidentally die while you're out:1. Test tube with broken lid, labeled "Danger: Nanobots"2. Notecard listing the current year and name of your country in quotation marks, followed by line reading "Don't disclose future events to locals; they don't know about the device yet and the signal isn't discovered by NASA until next month"

How do people organize their giant, local folders full of software projects that they've cloned with git? One, flat folder directory (hoping that there are no name collisions?)?Subfolders by hosting service / site? Or by that plus username?Total chaos?Hashtag we need to talk about #hierarchy

Does everybody put little stickers on the bezels on their monitor edges indicating where to divide it in thirds, or am I the only cool one?

Does anybody create their own custom, possibly local-only XDG (or not, I guess) URL-scheme handlers?I know it's doable; I just never hear about it.The Calendar app thing has reminded me that I meant to do that for a handful of #selfhosted applications.

So far, I have not seen an actual lawyer give an analysis of the newly-announced #Firefox #TOS thing and, to be frank, the hottakes that I have seen boosted by all yall here have not met my standard for "this person is doing a careful assessment".Instead, there is a whole lot of "this undoubtedly verifies what I always secretly expected" or "everything in these sorts of statements in a trojan horse intended to cause harm."So, please: If/when you do see some analysis by a lawyer, boost that.
