@helene @7 I just checked the top 30 instances on instances.social, and the top 5 have 80% of all users out of those 30. I know that there's a loooong tail, but that sort of consolidation will probably continue due to network effects. If the big instances decided to move to API 2.0 with dancing banana gifs or whatever users want, the rest of the fediverse would be faced with a follow or fork decision.Sorry, I'm unloading a bit, but I'm still trying to 'get' what will keep this space open.

@mastodonusercount Crazy numbers. Twitter's projections had it growing by about 25000 users per day, so Mastodon is growing *at least* 4x faster than Twitter at the moment.

Another day, another warning of #defederation or blocking.Yesterday, #journalists on a profession-based instance were the target. Today it's because a country-based instance has allowed their #police force to set up an account. I've never seen any mention of this being an issue in any server's rules, not even on the instance that issued this warning.

@tiago It's interesting when you realise that Gab is on the fediverse, just not on the fediverse that people like to talk about.When people say it's nicer "here", they really mean in the bubble that they (and their admins) have created.As more people with no interest in the philosophy of the fediverse arrive, that "here" may end up being a tiny curated corner of a much louder and rowdier fediverse.

@tiago I wonder if there are any "whitelist" server implementations, requiring the admin to actively authorise federation with new servers. I could imagine a lot of affinity-group instances going down that route...

@tiago I suspect it hasn't, as mastodon doesn't seem to be very linuxy in that sense. I was very disappointed to realise that I couldn't build my own comment filtering rules using rexexps 😃
