I'm doing some studying on hash tables right now, but I have to prevent myself from writing "bucket" as "Bucket", which is quite a task when you're talking about accessing table buckets by index, and that the buckets contain lists of items, and that many hash collisions cause bucket size to increase etc etc...

@ky0ko ...how are you planning on doing this?? 7 servers alone seems like slight overkill; I manage with one pokey little ARM box pretty fine...

@ky0ko Definitely interested to see how this infrastructure setup works.

@ky0ko Sounds a bit grim, but I'm eager to hear how this turns out.

@kaniini hey, I see the update for the pleroma chat got merged in. What's the end goal/purpose of the chat feature? As far as I can tell, it sort of functions as an instance-wide instant messenger.

Does anyone know of any decent tools for profiling bandwidth usage on Linux boxen? The hosting provider which xkcd.network is on doesn't bill for bandwidth, but it's something I'd like to keep an eye on, especially if we need to move somewhere else in the future. The nightly cronjob which removes remote media more than three days old is regularly reporting more than 100MB of media removed...(As before, boosts appreciated for visibility)#sysadmin

I sometimes catch myself wondering whether I should give in and move my IRC client into my web browser.

I have so many persistent fixtures in my web browsers (chat applications, mastodon) that moving IRC in with the rest of them would reduce the number of windows I have on my screen and the number of terminals I have open (my working environment is a collection of firefox windows and a collection of terminal windows flying in loose formation).

@ky0ko Well, I know there are CLI mastodon clients which I could use, but a *lot* of the fediverse which I see involves multimedia, which I'd probably wind up needing a web browser for anyway.(Unfortunately, where I am facebook messenger is the standard instant messaging application for talking to friends, and as far as I know the only clients for that are the vendor mobile apps and the web client.)

@ky0ko The issue I have is that I don't have a facebook account, I just have a messenger account (because the android app allows you to create an account using a mobile number, and I have a burner phone for this purpose). So I'm not sure if any third-party plugins are going to work correctly.

@ky0ko I've compiled it and am now prodding around to see if I can make it work.

Okay, I'm back to hacking on the private pleroma I set up a week and a half ago, and I can't work out how to configure the backend to *not* listen on 0.0.0.0. I have an nginx reverse proxy for terminating TLS and performing redirects from plain HTTP, so I only want pleroma to listen on localhost. Anyone got any ideas?

Of course, the second *after* I hit the "TOOT!" button, I immediately stumbled across the pleroma wiki page with instructions on how to do exactly what I want to do. *sigh*

I do this sort of thing (finding answers to my questions on my own immediately after soliciting advice from others) a *lot*

I wonder if you could host a single-user Mastodon instance on a Raspberry Pi 3. It would be one *hell* of a squeeze, and probably constantly swapping, but I doubt it's impossible.

@kalium Explanations of the historical background behind the ridiculous reasons might make a good appendix, and would almost certainly be informative.

@ky0ko @kalium I don't even know what the story behind that is, and I'm not sure that I want to.

@ky0ko I had a similar problem to this when netbooting a PowerPC Apple device into OpenBSD, because OpenFirmware loads the bootloader over DHCP, while the bootloader attempts to load the kernel using BOOTP.I spent quite a while staring at my dhcpd logs before figuring out what was going on...
