RetroBytes' recent video on ARM is pretty good, and suggests one of their strong suits is the testing/verification that they do -- something that may be a hangup for RISC-V as companies seek to compete using that.(this channel uses stock footage loops a bit too heavily, but I otherwise find pretty enjoyable)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t59EtDxpYmM

It's fascinating to me that the 32-bit ARM1 had around 25,000 transistors, which is actually on par with the 16-bit Intel 8086 from seven years earlier. Ken Shirriff recently counted 19,618 actual transistors, but space for potentially 29,277 in ROMs and programmable logic arrays that aid in decoding instructions and controlling chip behavior. Intel's 32-bit 80386 started with around 275,000 transistors, by comparison http://www.righto.com/2023/01/counting-transistors-in-8086-processor.html

Huh, I've never heard of the v2, v3, v4 versions of x86_64 before, though apparently those were defined in 2020. Hopefully a bit easier to deal with than every microarchitecture in existence (there are a lot...). I guess Linux distros will eventually have to drop support for early x86_64 CPUs, but hopefully using this newish glibc "hwcaps" feature will extend the lifetime of older systems. https://www.theregister.com/2023/03/09/opensuse_finds_x86_64_solution/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86-64#Microarchitecture_levels

Amtrak's Adirondack is set to resume north of Albany next month, finally reconnecting across the border to Montreal after COVID-related service cuts had suspended it earlier. However, the Rail Passengers Association says that tracks on the Canadian side were left unmaintained and will be under "extreme slow orders" (temporary speed limits) https://www.facebook.com/100064468338195/posts/pfbid02BSU2TBBHQyeMgnSyfzNTDovEK3CTxMCSXvwiDnLiR9EKQRyybTXQqJvk7T9fyENUl/?mibextid=Nif5oz

Uh oh, the ipmitool project has been put in a "public archive" state on GitHub. Speculation is that it may have been restricted since the main developer is in Moscow, but no confirmation of that yet.ipmitool is used for communicating with remote "lights-out" management devices embedded in server-class machines. BMC, IPMI, Dell iDRAC, HPE iLO, etc. devices all use or can use the IPMI protocol for controlling the system. https://www.phoronix.com/news/ipmitool-GitHub-Suspended

However, IPMI is mostly UDP-based and is generally considered less secure / insecure than other options. The HTTP-based Redfish protocol is largely replacing IPMI as a management scheme. It's fairly easy to get started with Redfish with something likecurl -sku username:password https[:]//server-bmc.domain/redfish/v1/(that trailing slash is important, annoyingly)

An interesting episode from David Roberts' Volts podcast about creating electric-fed heat batteries for storing intermittent renewable energy so it can be used in high-temperature industrial processes, a huge chunk of the non-transportation fossil fuel market today. The company the interviewee is from has just released a drop-in replacement for steam boilers, which covers much of that market, and is researching application-specific options for non-steam processes https://www.volts.wtf/p/why-electrifying-industrial-heat#details

My graphic design skills are very weak, but I figure I should submit at least one thing to this commission for replacing the MN state flag https://www.minnpost.com/state-government/2023/06/formal-effort-begins-to-replace-cluttered-genocidal-mess-on-minnesota-state-flag-and-seal/

The second one of these is likely what I'd actually submit, though the other was an earlier iteration that showed a bit more of the intent -- a zig-zag pattern to represent the sky, the forest / Arrowhead region, water / Lake Superior, and other land / prairie. The second simplifies the colors down to 3, and has a fancier star that could evoke flowers/prairie/agriculture

@SDF Thanks for the info. Is there a place to get updates when things like this happen? I see https://sdf.org/?status and https://www.sdf.org/status/ , though the first doesn't show any timestamps and the second was last updated in 2021. Of course, something taking down the whole data center would need an external page.I appreciate the work you do, though it's unsettling when I don't know where to check to figure out what's going on.

If they manage to think, they'll open up a more direct path, but if they have people climb up the west side of the stadium and go back down again like when I went to a Taylor Swift concert there, the distance to the south stop would be about 3/4 mile (probably equidistant to the Forum stop)
