@ceperez agree. A few years from now having an “assistant” that can accurately summarize and wrap knowledge into consumable pieces without the parroting / word-salad will be one or the most powerful applications on an individual level, assuming we retain access.Like how spreadsheets simplified accounting in the 80s this technology has the power to simplify information gathering. Properly packaged it could substantially elevate the potential of an individual researcher.

@ceperez the silicon valley mindset of move fast and break things, in other words ask forgiveness not permission—which has been historically evident in every major sector of technology throughout the last couple decades—is going to have dire consequences in this space.Regulation, if it happens, is likely to just cut out the small researchers and keep proprietary (and dangerous) research walled-off to the elite with a lot of capital which may be even worse than opening it all up.

@hn100 @eff you need to fight this or coordinate with another respectable group that has lobbying power who can. Utterly ridiculous.

@linear I feel like the physics of space travel as we understand it now preclude us ever being contacted / contacting others. Our lifespan is so infinitesimally small compared to the universe and the idea that some alien life could travel here somehow defying time & relativity but not be able to *not crash their spaceship* is hilarious and points to how myopic and self centered we are as a species.Still, interesting if true. I’d buy that we are the aliens before we have spooky visitors though

@louis finishing repairs and refurbishing a Dave Smith Instruments PolyEvolver synthesizer.Took it apart down to the chassis and removed and deep cleaned every single key.Incidentally, I do not recommend doing this unless you absolutely have to.

@dave If only someone in power noticed and took concrete steps and public action.Oh …this sensible quote is from someone in the administration in a position of authority? Yet still no major communication, action plan, or updating their own methods that they acknowledge are currently very ineffective?Well then. 🤦

@dave If only someone in power noticed and took concrete steps and public action.Oh …this sensible quote is from someone in the PREVIOUS administration who was in a position of authority? Yet still no major communication, action plan, or updating our current methods that they acknowledge are very ineffective?Well then. 🤦I guess hindsight is 20/20 especially when you can use it to arrack a political opponent.

@thenewoil yes, if there was absolutely 0 telemetry, tracking, etc. and it allowed me to wipe my account entirely at a moment’s notice I’d pay even more. Those products are expensive to run and monetization without tracking should be an option for all products that gather and profit from user data. My value from using them without ads is easily worth $10/mo, for instagram alone I’d pay that.Is it “right” is a different story, and I have doubts about their privacy practices even with payment.

@sj @thegibson chaining these things with other exploits is the problem. It’s very important to mitigate risk at the lowest level even if the vector isn’t exposed (or a known exploit doesn’t exist), because if one does arise there are a lot of avenues here that can be taken to install APTs in firmware which is …very bad. These shouldn’t have that ability, ever. There are PoCs in a sub folder but they aren’t that inventive approach-wise, but I don’t think that was their goal.
