@Unabart Oh, hell yes. I am looking forward to watching this. The first time I saw Buckethead perform, there were passages I’d heard on CD and just assumed were sped up in the studio. Nope, he plays it all. He is such a delightful weirdo full of glorious bulldada.

@Unabart Here in California, the laws around carried knives are strange. Switchblades are illegal but there is an explicit allowance for a certain type of spring assist which is effectively the same thing.

@futurebird In computer science terms, we’ll say a particular task is “compute bound” (or CPU bound), “memory bound,” or “I/O bound.” It’s a shorthand way of identifying whatever the limiting factor is. When AWS brought us into the “infrastructure as a service” (IaaS) era, before long they offered different categories of virtual servers for each type of workload. “Compute” in the way you describe is somewhat new but only a short hop from how we’ve been talking about IaaS for a while.

@futurebird The for-sure cases I know of were when someone was overclocking. (An overclocked CPU will run hotter than spec.)But, overclocking or no, CPUs that get too hot are supposed to slow down to compensate. It’s never been an issue for me so I don’t know whether the speed reduction is managed on-chip or by the OS. Hopefully someone else will clue me in. Short answer: Maybe. Heavy CPU use -> heat -> damage.

@futurebird My gaming buddy of many years was raised fundie and he told me essentially the same thing. I said it must be terrifying to constantly see the Devil around every corner. He said, no, it was actually very satisfying to feel special and one-up on everyone else, adding that the sense of separation increases the church’s hold on the flock.

Today I learned that John Philip Sousa was opposed to recording music.
