@luckytran unfortunately health in Canada is a provincial matter. I wish all her provincial counterparts felt the same. Ours says handwashing is the best way to prevent Covid (denying paxlovid to ill under-80s; denying boosters to under-65s for the past year, even as almost all under 60 have been infected in or via schools in an attempt to build “robust hybrid immunity.”) We will learn about access to the new Moderna vax “in the coming months.” No masks in hospitals, either.

a border collie story in several short chapters: today we took the dog to the beach at a place that is also a working industrial inlet. We took her buoyant bumper stick toy along. There is a king tide and there was no beach. So the dog scrabbled on riprap to get into the water and swim, which she loves to do, even before we throw her toy. 1/x #dogsofmastodon #bordercollie

today I rewarded myself for getting 150 assignments and 43 exams marked in 5 days, per deadline: went birding at the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Delta, BC, on the internationally important Pacific flyway. @futurebird this is a recycle yard in Shanghai’s Jewish Quarter in 2009. Rampant development was replacing the hutongs and older high-rises—an issue for sure—but what was cool was how the locals showed up with barrows and dollies to stack and carry away the demo debris to store in these makeshift recycle yards, which were everywhere, for reuse. So tidy and so communal. (Could not find out more because English speakers v sparse in non-tourist areas then, and my Mandarin is limited.)

@VisualStuart eating Cheerios in the kitchen in Victoria BC in my pyjamas, with my sister. There was a booming crash that shook the house. My stepfather came roaring out of my parents’ bedroom: “You kids stop jumping down the stairs!” “We weren’t jumping down the stairs!” “Well, whatever you were doing, just stop it.” When we went outside later that morning, there was an inch-thick layer of ash on the Pinto station wagon. The radio said that Mount St Helen’s had erupted.
