I'm bored, so let's do an experiment. Here are two poll options: Are we able to distribute our votes so that, by the end of the polling time, only TWO people will have picked the first one, and all the others will have picked the second one? :boost_ok:

Heads-up: The Eurovision Song Contest will take place from today (7 hours from now) to this Saturday. Several Fedi users will livetoot the shows, so if you are not interested, I highly recommend adding the hashtag #Eurovision to your filters (and also #ESC and #ESC2021 if you want to be extra sure).I will livetoot the semifinals from my other account @miramarco using the hashtags above.

My mind keeps linking these two facts together:• Only 28% of patients are able to complete the list of their symptoms without being interrupted by their physician. (Cf. Marvel, M K et al. “Soliciting the patient's agenda: have we improved?.” JAMA vol. 281,3 (1999))• Victor Lustig, the fraudster who “sold” the Eiffel Tower, listed “being a patient listener” as the first commandment of con men.Let's not be surprised if people who are in distress shun the doctors and turn to quacks.

People should never be edge cases. If your system fails because a person cannot hear sounds, your system is broken. If it fails because a person has no address, it’s broken. If it fails because their phone number comes from another country, it’s broken. If it fails because of all the reasons above, it’s still broken.Edge cases happen, but human beings don’t deserve to find themselves in one.

While Musk keeps insisting that sharing the position of his plane endangers him, I keep thinking of King Olav V of Norway, who used to take the public trains because he wanted to lead by example, and when he was asked why he did not have any bodyguards with him, he answered that the whole Norwegian population would protect him

I wish that all of us, and by “us” I mean all internet users, understood that the models used by our modern user interfaces (windows, buttons, pop-up alerts, tabs, desktops, icons, shortcuts, badges, etc.) are *not intuitive* and that we are just used to them, some of us even from birth. It's like learning to ride a bicycle – it takes time and you have to wait for the moment when everything clicks in your head, and once you get there, you are able to do it automatically, without even thinking about it. The same is true for navigating the user interfaces of computers and smartphones, and I wish more people were aware of that.

And yes, this is a subtoot for all those who mock old people for “not getting” or “having to learn” how to use PCs and smartphones

@enby_of_the_apocalypse I would love to see that, because if the shareholders start selling their shares out of fear that the CEO AI would screw up, that would say a lot about their true attitude towards a technology they don’t mind if it affects their customers

One thing that worries me in the current internet trends is the strong push towards the single answer or the single feed: the “For You” feed where users are supposed to receive the content they want to watch or read; the single answer to a query given to ChatGPT or to Google (with their infoboxes or their new Bard AI thing); the single rating that is supposed to sum up all the opinions about a movie or a restaurant; and so on. We are losing opportunities to look around and make our own choices.

And what I’m worried about the most is the fact that there will be people whose internet presence will be moulded by this paradigm. We older people know what is being taken from us and we might be more willing to look for it, to scroll down or click around to see the reviews, the extra links, the accounts that are not being promoted to us. But if you don’t know that you have such a chance, would you look for it?

Every now and then I hear about some useful resources that could help me a lot, but which I cannot access because they are on Instagram or Facebook. Please please please if you are doing anything that qualifies as “public service”, please don't limit your reach to walled gardens only, please do it in at least one openly accessible place too

If the internet will become saturated by AI-generated content, it will be inevitable that any random piece of content will be treated as unreliable unless it has been confirmed to be genuine by someone we know to be human. Therefore we will have human-curated lists of human-generated websites, articles, and videos…In other words: Web directories and blogrolls will be back, babeyyyyy

@Annalee True, and I’ll add one thing: The “alcohol is healthy actually” myth persists here in Italy too, as it is peddled by the wine industry (obviously) and by the nationalistic politics that use the Italian cuisine, including many constructed traditions, as one of the foundations of the national identity. So I don’t think it’s *only* access to health care: The whole alcohol myth is something many want to believe in because they profit from it.

A thing I didn't realize until it was pointed out to me: Google's upcoming policy of removing all the accounts that have been inactive for two years would wipe out lots, lots, and lots of old YouTube videos. I don't like hyperboles, but that would be a gigantic loss of media and resources.https://www.blog.google/technology/safety-security/updating-our-inactive-account-policies/

Google says that they won't start deleting accounts before December, and it is possible that they may walk back, or amend their decision to make exceptions for YouTube content. But until anything official comes up, we should assume that millions of videos may get deleted by the end of the year.

For the sake of completeness: Creator Liaison claimed on Twitter that accounts with YouTube videos will not be deleted: https://twitter.com/YouTubeLiaison/status/1658829489466384387 but this is far from an official answer, and the original Google post still mentions YouTube content as part of what is removed when an account is deleted

There are some people I (used to) know who joined Telegram, I never chatted with them through the app, and then they deleted their account or got it deleted for inactivity. So now if I scroll down the list of my chats, I read the only message I have about them, i.e. “Deleted account is now on Telegram!”, which is a delightful oxymoron
