This piece in The Atlantic is excellent and frames so much of what I’ve been trying to say about how Mastodon and Twitter are different. I’ve found Mastodon to be great for social *networking* and bad for social *media.*And that is my favorite part of being here. https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2022/11/twitter-facebook-social-media-decline/672074/

This article is an excellent summary of the cultural differences between #Mastodon and #Twitter, and how the #TwitterMigration is decidedly complex for the existing people in the #Fediverse. This is an absolute must read.https://www.hughrundle.net/home-invasion/

I miss universal masking, especially during seasons where respiratory infections are high.

I've only been on the #fediverse for what, three years? There is so much I love here--a cultural commitment to holding the helpful parts of social networking, while letting go of the extractive and exploitive. We have refused to have our attention or our emotions harvested for corporate profit. It's easier to "be" here.As we hold onto that, may we also rise to the challenge of true inclusion.1/2

We must not use demands for Content Warnings, mental health, or cultural norms as ways of shutting down or silencing marginalized people who are joining as the bird site self-immolates.Is there a lot of toxicity there? Yes.Do BIPOC deserve to be heard in the fullness of their experiences? Yes.There is no megacorp here to enforce a culture here. We must make it ourselves. We have to do better now than we have in the past.2/2

When I left Twitter for Mastodon, I was disappointed how white it is here. I stayed because I believed, in time, Twitter would fail and some alternative would emerge. It’s *finally* becoming less white here. People of Color are arriving in droves, including personal friends and creators I followed on other media. Y’all: we can’t mess this up. Don’t clutch pearls or hold up sacred cows. White monoculture is problematic, sure. But it’s also boring as hell.I’m here for a more alive Mastodon.

Content Warnings on activating content helps people with severe mental illness survive. This is not a matter of censorship. I have never asked some to CW content, especially about their own experiences. You do you and what you need to thrive. But when people choose to add a CW, I’m able to take a breath and de-escalate my nervous system before and after reading something terrible about the word we live in. 1/x

@taylorlorenz I see lots of good replies about the lore, but what's most wonderful about Mastodon to many (most?) of us is there is no "big stuff," and no "main characters."It's a community of communities, and there is no engagement engine artificially inflating the stakes of a given conversation.I had ~70,000 followers on the bird site--bot a lot more than 70x the headache and heartache.

I'm skeptical of #Bluesky because it's built on the same tech VC mindset that has been so harmful in prior generations of social media.I'm skeptical of the #fediverse and #Mastodon because Black and brown people get shouted over by tech leftists when they have the audacity to name their experiences here. That crap shows up in my timeline every single time I log on.Before you say, "my feed isn't like that," let me ask, "How many Black and brown people do you follow?"

@wjmaggos The solution is for every marginalized community to make their own fork?I want to make sure I understand what you are recommending.

@wjmaggos @btanderson @northernlights @LLS @victoriadecapua White liberals (and I have been guilty of this!) are often too quick to offer pithy solutions to systemic issues of racial injustice.

@LLS @wjmaggos I haven't know how to respond to this sentiment, even after taking several days to mull it over. White people want different things in a product or service, yet somehow developers find a way to find intersections of value and build against them. It's only when marginalized communities enter the fray that we throw our hands up and say, "Gosh! This is too hard! Everyone wants different things."

I’d like to thank Elon Musk and Steve Huffman for inspiring me to delete my accounts on the two social media platforms that I used the most. My quality of life and mental health have both improved considerably. I always hoped someone would do something about the impact of Twitter and Reddit. I never expected it to be the CEOs of those very companies.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but the term "woke" didn't start with kids on Twitter. The was first recorded by Lead Belly in the 1930s in a song called "The Scottsboro Boys," about the dangers Black Americans faced traveling through states in the Deep South. The original line was "best stay woke," as in, "remain aware of the dangers of racism."Black communities shortened the term to "stay woke," over time, and eventually added "woke" as a state of being--or constant awareness.

No matter how much white progressives or conservatives around the world co-opt or otherwise abuse the term, it's organs like with Black people, and its original context is quite wise.
