@lyyn @delta @cehteh There are several points here:- if you need a media that can't be edited, use more public blockchain-based things.- implementation of this feature has to be done in the following way. You talk with a friend. Your Delta instances are friends. One friend says, hey, change this and that please. Friend says sure, and changes messages on other side(s). Note friendly foundation here. BTW, it feels that Signal also has to follow this pattern, cause e2ee.

@lyyn @delta @cehteh May be this comment needs focusing. In e2ee, edits/deletes always depend on cooperation of end user device, so, assume all versions were seen. Something similar to physical voice conversation: you've said something, and then you correct it -- it is understood that lousy version could have been heard.

@osma @phanpy @david_chisnall It is not about presentation.First you cut everyone's thinking into some character limit from SMS era. Then you ask why people have problem adding 2+2, electing circus like in US, etc.Its just not a good culture to limit thought line.

@oblomov @osma @phanpy @david_chisnall You see, besides reader's pain, there is writers pain of needing to pay attention to restrictions that have no relation to content. The only thing needed is how you present long post, for readers' sake.

@oblomov @osma @phanpy @david_chisnall Like if you won't help people write long, all you gonna have is GenAI slop/vomit.

@ricci @kiwiWolle May I suggest a more nuanced view?Have you seen Signal on desktop?Have you seen DeltaChat (I feel they too)?Have you noticed that standards for web in mid 2010s absorbed helpful to developer patterns, used by JQuery, cause without it is more drudgedry for developer?Have you took a mirror to all those users, asking for features? What open source developer should do?And, since this is about popular comment, show me your library, you've created for those at the front line.

@ricci And then, different takes on developer-helping tooling have showed space of options. Today the place is better.

@ricci There was a comment of someone in kernel space, or may be even Linus, but comment from 15+ years ago. The gist was as follows: dealing with user facing, front end, different inputs -- all this is far more difficult and annoying than doing kernel, as there you define and control everything. To me this reminds:- it is way easier to be theoretical physicist in gravity+quantum than an engineer. I know personally.- we, theoreticians have failed to give proper QR mental model. Very similar.

@cryptgoat They always talk about "notification fatigue" in users.Always leading to opposite side -- no info shown, no user-friendly way to check/(dis/en)able capabilities.Example. Researchers need time to investigate what apps are doing, while Android has all info, what java services (capabilities) are given to this or that process. Is anyone researching a way to engage users about their info-flow, hence info-security, with the goal to overcome "fatigue" effect? Middle solution should exist

@fox @kwlug @nixCraft Id est, in your context, do what you do. Btw, it uses LXC for contaner-style systems.Yet, when you'll need to step out of current sitiation, you know where your real private cloud can be found.

@fox @kwlug @nixCraft "wdym" of course depends on context. Mine is as follows:- 10+ physical boxes, where everything mostly need to be structured with scripts. GUI isn't enough when you don't baby-sit systems.- ability to run test of the whole thing on one box. You develop (dev), and run your cloud parts with networking setup (ops) on local machine for fast iterations. CLI on hosts and with ability to console into guests is priceless here.
