How was TI 99 assembly like, compared to others of its kind (6502, Z80, maybe even 68k)?Syntax, "feel", eco system?

Does any of the new programming languages everyone seems to force upon poor old LLVM support function names with spaces? No weird unicode characters, regular spaces. That used to be a thing waaaay back in the ALGOL age, but apparently we've got some kind of StockholmSyndrome with CamelCase now.

@niclas On the other hand, we also know a lot more about parsing. And skipping white space is done anyways for other parts, just not within identifiers.I would guess it's a combination of being used to how variables/functions are "supposed" to be named (upper/lower ASCII plus underscore maaaaybe a minus), grep gripers (ambiguity when using braindead tools) and the inability to "strop" keywords. Can't sell upper-case keywords.

@publicvoit @worldsendless Do we regard "groupware" (i.e. Outlook) features as core elements of "email"?

@CodingItWrong I remember using ".C" for C++ files, which could mess with both Mac and Win, as they're case-insensitive.

@craftyguy This also works as a highly effective trolling to call for "well, actually…" of two fandoms that often get way too puristic.

When did we decide that full-page blog headers are ok? I think I might've missed that meeting.

I increasingly get the feeling that RiscOS might have gotten the closest to having the ideal file save/open dialog.By not having one at all and letting you do it with drag and drop to and from the regular file manager. All too often file save dialogs have to recreate major parts of the file manager, as it's convenient to have some of its features available, like creating directories or renaming files, without having to abort saving/opening, doing that in the "proper" file manager and then saving/opening again.Never mind when your default file manager is quite different from the one the dialogs assume. Can happen a lot on linux, but even on Windows you might "live" in your Norton Commander clone of choice and then have to deal with Explorer-ish dialogs. Now, the UX as in RiscOS surely can be improved a bit, but I think the core principle avoids a lot extra work and duplicated code.

@flexion I guess all those cheap electricity datacenters for the cryptocoiners can be gainfully repurposed for retrocomputing soon ;)

Given the recent Chrome stuff, and general web shenanigans, maybe it's time we reset back to the initial KHTML version, before Safari and later Chrome forked off.Bet we could still enjoy a nice web with that.

Was there ever a chance that any of the Unix-y workstations could've been a mass market PC contender in the 80s (and early 90s)? I mean, you hear a lot about Ataris, Macs and Amigas being in competition with the IBM PC and its compatibles, and all of them were upwardly mobile in the Unix sector at one time or another. But was there something in the line of Sun 1 or DEC Professional 3xx systems were there were plans of making a newer or cut-down version available to the general public?#retrocomputing #unix

@penguin42 Yeah, that would've been to late anyways, all the battles were fought by then. The only relevant MIPS Linux system I can remember was that blue router box…But in the early days, IBM PCs were quite expensive and DEC had some $3k machines, never mind the first 68k workstations.I guess DEC failed with its Rainbow and moved away from the market, and Sun just wasn't big enough then.

In software development teams the "standup meeting" has come into existance to make sure that people don't talk to long. But that was a previous age, before coders self-optimized too much, got fit and/or work from home standing on comfy cushions. So go up a level: "Standup comedy meeting"."What's the deal with pull requests?"

Going to travel to the #uk for a week, with a BritRail pass for all of #england, so anything interesting you'd recommend for a day trip (willing to go into other kingdoms, too)? Both city trips and light hiking.
