"""The historian Alexander de Grand calls this intrinsic fragmentation hiding behind consensus “hyphenated fascism”: so, you had conservative-fascism, nationalist-fascism, technocratic-fascism, syndicalist-fascism, Catholic-fascism etc. Each saw in the fascist movement and state the possibility of realizing their own program. This was made possible because of the excessively abstract terms of fascist pronouncements… """https://johnganz.substack.com/p/the-enigma-of-peter-thiel

"From the early 20th century, the country was able to import large quantities of cocoa from its African colony, the Belgian Congo. Contrary to popular belief, however, Belgium's colonies did not play an important role in the foundation of the Belgian chocolate industry." — https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belgian_chocolate what does that even mean, Wikipedia?how do these two sentences, next to each other, make any sense??

we have history preserved in song that goes back 12 thousand years ago, and (climate) science has only caught on to the lessons in those songs in the past half century:- when people killed off the last Megafauna, they realised they have an irreversible impact on nature- after the flood caused by the end of the last ice age, they realised, if nature tips you into the ocean, you will drownwonder if we can relearn these lessons without reliving them

70% of cases are asymptomatic; mild symptoms which can occur include sore throat and fever; in a proportion of cases more severe symptoms develop such as headache, neck stiffness, and paresthesia. These symptoms usually pass within one or two weeks. A less common symptom is permanent paralysis, and possible death in extreme cases. Years after recovery, post-polio syndrome may occur, with a slow development of muscle weakness similar to that […]https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polio

i think what really annoys me about Anglos dropping diacritical* marks on all letters of words and names they don't even know is that they've gotten rid of them in their own language, where their primary use was distinguishing foreign words and their pronunciation from words that have been in the language a little longer:- résumé: you know what this word means and how it's pronounced- resume: good luckit's then no longer a simple skill you can acquire, but all about deep immersion#ć

… for the second time now.and it's starting to dawn on me, that we're kinda replicating the last 5 mass extinction scenarios, but, like, combining them into one…we're… diversifying our extinction portfolio, covering all bases.

@feld @annika i wish we could put our washing machine (and optionally, a dryer) into our shed, but our shed looks like a haunted house, crawling with plants, rats, insects and ghouls and ghosts (and our bikes). But we *did* finally manage to get a dishwasher into the house:

TIL: "A hunting boomerang is delicately balanced and much harder to make than a returning one. The curving flight characteristic of returning boomerangs was probably first noticed by early hunters trying to "tune" their throwing sticks to fly straight." — https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boomerangi thought it'd be the other way around…
