@ssfckdt @Lockdownyourlife (I kind of don't like analogies, but that's my fault for making one ;)I think in this analogy, mastodon is like the cool, homebrew farmer's market down the road .. not _really_ a mall, but still has a lot of the same structural underpinnings (it's on private property, and if you want to do something besides set up a booth to sell goods/services it's likely to be a problem)

I started telling my friends at least 10 years ago that, on balance, I'd shut down the Internet (if I had a magic-wand) immediately.I'm even more pessimistic about it now, although I continue to work towards more privacy and openness full-time, with all of my professional (luck!) and free time (commitment!)Sadly, I think we're taking the immediate risks of "AI" even less seriously than we took the risks of advertising 20 years ago.#ChatGPTPlease: prove me wrong. Work for an open Internet.

@freemo There's the Pyrsistant (maybe spelled wrong) library that gives you "kind-of functional-style immutables".

@penguin42 @b0rk Yeah, consistency definitely a problem. I don't know the history, but where these separate commands all written by different people? (Some of them sure feel like it!)I really with Aphyr had written something like https://aphyr.com/posts/342-typing-the-technical-interview for git ;) but I can't find anything...

@isagalaev I 100% agree with what seems to be @mitsuhiko 's main point there: that trying to bolt typing onto Python is not a great idea, and has led to *far* less readable Python, overall. If you want a strongly-typed language, there are plenty to choose from.#python #haskell(I too don't want to re-hash all the argument for or against types, and I do know C++, Java and at least enough Haskell to be dangerous)

@ajroach42 @angiebaby @newellijaytv This should scale with "number of instances occupied by followers" as I _assume_ (hope?!) that the previews are generated per-instance.Unfortunately the post doesn't share the number of servers hitting them (surely it's not 37000+ instances?)Sites that can't handle this number of requests could presumably take some steps themselves (e.g. "slow down requests from Mastodon instances"). What do they expect "mastodon" to do here, exactly?

@benchaotica @ajroach42 @angiebaby There's currently ~11000 mastodon instances; federation itself takes time, so even if you had 11k followers each on their own instance ... is that really "DoS" territory? On the flip side, do sites that _can't_ handle (at most) 11k requests over "many minutes" already have a way to opt out of preview generation? Also, "it's foss" takes 84 requests and 6.26MB (or "4 Dooms") to load, perhaps something can be done there too...

@glyph tty-share is nice (and you can combine it with https://github.com/meejah/fowl for easy-to-set-up probably-local networking between a tty-share server and client, to avoid using the public server)

@encthenet I'll re-check, but I'm 99% sure there's already a C dependency in magic-wormhole (definitely Rust, because "cryptography") so as long as there's Python bindings, could work?(It does use Twisted though so that might make it harder, depending on whether "the C library" does I/O itself or not)

I love that there's still some really cool ANSI art being produced, like I remember on the very best BBSes ;)For example https://16colo.rs/pack/impure89/impure89.ansDoes anyone take commissions for these sorts of pieces? Nothing nearly as elaborate as this but ....similar style, for a terminal application.#ansi #pixelart #magicWormhole

I have made a release of "git-withme" which allows peer-to-peer Git usage over #magicWormhole This uses short, human-memorable codes to invite peers to collaborate (push, pull, etc) in real-time on a Git repository with no external hosting providers. Creates a temporary bare repository on the host so it feels like GitLab style usage."pip install git-withme" or see the project pages:https://git.sr.ht/~meejah/git-withmehttps://pypi.org/project/git-withme/#python #git #p2p

@505fred neither of those things are end-to-end encrypted by default.Perhaps your family would be open to using Signal instead of WhatsApp (you can tell them -- truthfully -- that WhatsApp uses the Signal protocol internally. "Allegedly", because it's not open-source like Signal).

@Em0nM4stodon anyone who thinks Google (et al) are going to "actually delete" bona fide human interaction data are ... naive?
