One of my most mortal enemies is the rubberized soft touch coating put on all sorts of electronics in the 90s through to the 2010s that over time degrades into a gross sticky surface that can't be cleaned away.

One positive story is that when my original Zoom H1 digital audio recorder developed this sticky syndrome I emailed Zoom and they sent me a new H1n, without the rubberized surface. Zoom proved to be a real class act.

@brewsterkahle I remember logging onto the IUMA via telnet when I got my first university internet account ca. 1993 or '94.

@grammargirl Pretty sure this is the metaphor behind the naming of the public radio workshop Transom https://transom.org/about/about-transom/

I'm very honored to have my old radio show and #podcast now archived at Digital Library of Amateur Radio & Communications in the @internetarchive thanks to @savetz, who also gave me the impetus to clean up the old RSS feed and fix the missing files. Now we're up to date for 2004 to the end of the show in 2009. Sometimes hearing the old show makes me cringe, but there are also some interviews of historical note.https://archive.org/details/mediageek

My fellow DJ at Freeform Portland, Kim Paris, just broadcast this wonderful celebration of airchecks and music from the FM Radio Archive at @internetarchive, on the occasion its 4th anniversary. #radio #aircheck https://www.mixcloud.com/pariski/melting-pot-with-kim-paris-10724-fm-radio-archive-4th-anniv-10am-noon-on-freeform-portland/

@ajroach42 I take it that using regular AA or AAA batteries is important?

@ajroach42 If you can deal with rechargeable batteries I can recommend the Sanyo Xactis. I've got a couple that I like for this purpose. Most have stereo sound, which can be nice.My first, bought new in 2009, was a VPC-CG10 which is 720p w/ manual controls. The VPC-PD2BK is 1080p w/ a flip-style body like the Kodak, and a true 3x optical zoom. The batteries are used in many different cameras & devices to it's easy to get chargers & spares. If I'm taking one out I have a few charged and ready.

@ajroach42 They’re plentiful and cheap these days. Here’s a video I took at a street fest a long time ago that shows how well the CG10 handles amplified music. https://flic.kr/p/8oF2sG

@ajroach42 Is it a new trend? I've always thought some people just want reality to bend to their wishes.

@ajroach42 Could be a trend. Maybe I've just always worked in fields where folks want the perfect audience for their perfect thing, for like a dollar.

@ajroach42 Fun! I’ve often considered getting one, since I’m quite fond of my Zoom audio recorders. Always thought would be nice for nature field recordings.

@ajroach42 Definitely sounds like he's spoiling for a fight, but I think you accurately guess that he wants to provoke someone else to start it. Responding non-aggressively is best. Inside the shop you can be firm, repeat that he needs to leave, but don't negotiate. I've been in these situations in community spaces before, and being calm and non-aggressive, but firm as possible typically leaves the person with no choice but to give up, since they won't get the chance to act the victim.

@ajroach42 FWIW in my experience with college and community radio, that sell underwriting (advertising), they don't lean on metrics so much as community impact. It's sold on both good will and perception of the audience. A lot of local and niche media advertising is sold that way. So I wouldn't sweat the metrics so much as try to build a strong case as to why it's good to support New Elijay. The reach should be a secondary argument.

@Unabart My wife has one of their records that she bought back in the late 80s or early 90s.
