@Ricardus the record shop (remember those?) that I went to as a high schooler filed their records under "Crosby, Stills, Nash, And Occasionally Young"

Running Mastodon servers takes time and money. To help with the latter, many Mastodon servers accept donations. For my home server, @SDF, the donation page is https://sdf.org/?subscribe - scroll to the bottom for “Support SDF’s efforts in the Fediverse.” I’m donating monthly - if you like it here, and if you have the means, will you join me in supporting your Mastodon hosts?

@ParadeGrotesque @iiogama @bkhl @cosullivan @FoolishOwl Great idea. Now if we could just get the new-user firehose turned off...

If you missed the @SDF OpenVOIP Special Presentation on the Fediverse featuring smj, @cosullivan, @iiogama, @ldbeth and yours truly, here's an archive https://archives.anonradio.net/202211020200_openvoip.mp3We talk about what makes the Fediverse interesting, cool and or better. We also talk about some other unrelated stuff like hockey and stereotypical Canadian accents because that's the sort of thing friends do.

Thousands of new users here at @SDF Mastodon and while we have had to use what @ParadeGrotesque calls “The Mighty Cluebat of Love and Banishment” a little bit, most of you are turning out to be real, authentic, friendly PEOPLE. Not bots, not spammers, not jerks. That’s awesome. Thanks for that.

Because you’re awesome people, we WILL use said cluebat if needed, to keep this place open and welcoming. If you run into someone or something deserving of meeting the cluebat, please report it. We read all reports and try to act fairly.

@ParadeGrotesque @cosullivan @rudi @bkhl @SDF @iiogama Well put. Easy to read and understand. Most people will have no problem with any of this.

@Ricardus @cs apparently, around the time that the eel took over, mastodon.sdf.org was at the top or near the top of the server listing on joinmastodon.org, so a lot of people just picked this one as the default, I suppose. We will see how many of them post and engage and become regular users. The mods are whacking the ones that are obviously bogus, but we're tending to give new people a chance to either join the conversation or shoot themselves in the foot.

Hello friends. Just a reminder that @SDF is a non-profit (US internal revenue code 501(c)(7), aka "social club.") SDF is run by volunteers and is funded by donations from its members. SDF is not a big, well-funded corporation like Twitter or Facebook.SDF is doing the best they can to respond to the explosive growth here on Mastodon. Patience, and understanding that this is not a commercial service with an SLA, are helpful. So are donations: https://sdf.org/?welcome

A reminder to all: while today is Election Day in the United States, it is not Election Day everywhere, and if you are not interested (either because you live outside the US, or you just don't want to read about it) you can use the Filter function to mute words like "vote", "election", etc.People posting about the election could also use the Content Warning (CW) function to hide the text of their posts.Either way, remember to be excellent to each other, whether you're voting or not or can't.

Following on to the filter suggestion:- if you uncheck "whole word" when specifying a word to filter, it will function as a stem - so "vote" would also match "voted", "votes", but not "voting"- you can now specify multiple words in one filter- you can set an expiration date on filters, in case you only want to, say, filter election talk this week but hear about it at other timesFilters are a very flexible system here on Mastodon. Take advantage of them to create the feed you want.

If you drive about 15 minutes west of my Northern Virginia apartment, you'll end up in one of the largest concentrations of data center buildings in the US. This is where companies like Amazon, Google, and Twitter have huge buildings full of servers, network equipment, and miles of cable, ready to add a new server at a moment's notice. And when one data center building fills up, they can easily build another one.@SDF isn't like that.1/

@SDF is large enough to have its own servers (as opposed to renting "cloud" servers) but nowhere near as large as the big guys. When a new server is needed, someone needs to purchase it, go in and install it. This takes time and human effort, and means we've had some growing pains that are not as common in the world of huge data centers full of servers at the ready.2/

@cosullivan @angelleah Widower of just over four years here, and recently the nest has emptied as well. I agree with Christina. I have no idea how to do dating again. I have no idea if I even want to. It is indeed a strange and unfamiliar feeling. All the best to you both.

Picked up a Xiegu X6100 in Radioddity's anniversary sale. Not the greatest HF radio, I know, but fit my current budget and has the features I want. Took it up to the roof of my building's parking garage, plopped a 20m vertical on the roof of my car, and was able to rx some SSB, FT8 and JS8Call. No tx yet, but a successful proof of concept. As my late wife would say, I've taken a step into a larger world.
