Stephen King says that a writer must write what is true for a given character, not what he personally thinks it's right.But the main character in 1984 was an intellectual, he was smart enough to see through the party's propaganda. Sexually assaulting another person is NOT the kind of thought an intellectual man casually has, and if he ever does — because the mind can be pretty sick sometimes — he wouldn't proudly confess it.

In another scene, before they begin their romantic affair, he runs into her outside of work and starts suspecting he is being followed. His thought here is picking a rock and smashing her head open. This is true to his character because he is being paranoid, he doesn't know who is or is not part of the Thought Police. This is the kind of thought someone being persecuted for political reasons might have, sexually assaulting someone is NOT.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is this: I think 1984 is a good novel. There's a point when it turns into a non-fiction essay that I didn't enjoy much but it's OK. What is not OK, I didn't like, and serves no purpose — literally, no fuckin' one — is this projection of what might be the author's own sexual perversion. It's disgusting.
