Brightening up a gloomy Saturday afternoon by replacing some heritage light bulbs. Look children, can you believe we used to illuminate our homes with tiny glowing strips of resistant wire!

Back from Homebase where we puzzled over various actual and equivalent wattages, energy efficiency ratings, and some wizarding unit of light measurement called "lumens". And oh... that really is quite bright

The examples used seem to fall into 2 categories:1. massive construction or aviation projects, e.g. HS2, London 2012, Concorde, where an iconic one-off, carbon intensive cultural artefact is brought into being2. everyday behaviours from operations in high-reliability organisations, e.g. intensive care, aviation safety, that are not really projects at all

I'm more convinced than ever that the root cause of the high failure rate in many projects is that they should never have been projects in the first place

@simon I worked for a telco that sold the phones and network connectivity. For a long while, senior leadership still thought of the mobile browser and apps as a toy or a "value added service" rather than the main deal. It was surprisingly hard, for example, to land the point that customers might want to manage their account on the device, rather than by voice call to our contact centres

😢 Sad story: For a long time pre-2022 I'd have happily paid #twitter $8 a month for a well-moderated, ad-free, time-ordered timeline. They never gave me that choice😊 Happy ending: That's exactly what the #fediverse has enabled for me. I make $8 donations to my instance host to help keep it sustainable

@rolle you know, it's totally normal to be worried when a loved one is sick, especially a child. Trust your instincts and get medical help for him if something doesn't seem right. Hope he's better soon
