@animeirl @ilovecomputers I think a large part of it is also a culture that has become a self-fulfilling prophesy. Developers with an eye for design are attracted to macOS. As more well-designed apps appear on macOS, more design-focused developers want to be part of the platform. This is why I’m very bothered by all the garbage “shovel-ware” and electron/web-based apps that have been showing up. New developers look at this and think, “I guess this is acceptable.”

@animeirl @ilovecomputers Discord drives me nuts. I actually don’t like the UI. But it’s more about subtle things. Non-native right click menus and input boxes… things like that. There’s a series of similar things that make the experience annoying; not to mention poor performance. UX is easily just as important as UI. A good macOS app is more than a pretty face. It’s about the details.

@animeirl @ilovecomputers I find the UI to be slow. I’m on a 2017 i7 MBP, so maybe the performance of electron doesn’t scale well? That is, maybe native elements “catch up” at a certain clock speed? Or maybe a difference of what kind of GPU acceleration is available.

@animeirl @ilovecomputers also, I wouldn’t compare a good electron app to a “bad” native app. For the best comparison, I would look at the best built apps (of similar functionality) on both ends. What you said suggests that a native app can always beat an electron app (as long as the native app is designed well).

@animeirl @ilovecomputers electron definitely has an appeal. But I would say that it should be “the right tool for the right job.” Sometimes it’s better to have multiple native apps to take advantage of each platform’s specific benefits. That said, what about React Native? I don’t know much about it myself, but I’ve been told by others that it could be a “best of both worlds” solution.

@animeirl @ilovecomputers ahh. I didn’t realize that. But, thanks for the info and perspective on electron/your experiences!

@cdmnky Yes! I took elementary Japanese classes in college, all taught by native speakers. However, I’ve found that learning from a native English speaker instead has greatly deepened my understanding of the language: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOcym2c7xnBwRNLWXOAtlN-9dbLkctxV-

@JibrilTheFlugel Starcraft 2 is always a good choice, even if it’s just the single player campaign. :blob_laughing:

So, today I noticed that a number of the Windows October update’s features are basically macOS.

Regardless how bad it could be, I’d definitely watch a new animated Mario movie. Who remembers the series from the late 80’s?https://www.engadget.com/2018/11/06/super-mario-bros-animated-movie-in-development/

@Ocean22 only time will tell how potentially terrible it will be. That said, I liked the Despicable Me movies. So, maybe it won’t be that bad.
