A few weeks ago, I was trying to use GPT-3 for chat/conversation by replaying entire conversation each cycle. Didn’t work well. Now, we have: https://openai.com/blog/chatgpt/?utm_source=tldrnewsletter - I can’t wait for developer API access. I really appreciate the @OpenAI very low cost dev APIs. I have recently also started using HuggingFace models and APIs. I hope that the business models work out for these services to stick around a very long time.

I don’t really want to get into the Twitter vs. Mastodon thing. That said, I now find myself just using Twitter to get tech alerts from people I follow and use Mastodon mostly for general purpose interesting reading and some tech. While I am deeply into tech (50+ US Patents, 20+ books), maybe here is the place to post more ‘human stuff’ like hiking pictures (I live in beautiful Sedona Arizona), favorite recipes and food, Chinese and other sci-fi, etc. Or, maybe not 😎

I am super interested in Hybrid AI, which to me basically means Neuro-Symbolic (for now).I spent 2 hours this morning with IBM's Logical Neural Networks library LNN. Very cool stuff but a work in progress. I am marking my calendar for 3 months from now to 'git pull' and try again.LNN: https://github.com/IBM/LNN (tutorials are good, but works in progress)IBM’s Neuro-Symbolic AI Toolkit: https://ibm.github.io/neuro-symbolic-ai/toolkit/ is an indexReally good Python LNN docs: https://ibm.github.io/LNN/lnn/LNN.html

Ooops, oh no! After 40 years of using Emacs I missed about 1/3 of the shortcuts on Emacs Beginner's Cheat Sheet (linked on Sacha's (@sachac) always excellent Emacs newsletter): https://www.reddit.com/r/emacs/comments/zi9gea/ultimate_emacs_cheat_sheet/I think it is true that for most of us, we learn what we need to get done what we want to get done and then stop learning. That is why I enjoy writing so much. When I start writing a new book I have preconceived notions (often incorrect) that I already really understand a subject.

For all their faults as The Mega Corporation, Apple does produce pleasing products.I now have Apple’s Advanced Data Protection on my iPhone, both iPad Pros, iMac and MacBook Pro. Nice.I did have to wipe macOS from two old backup laptops - I installed Ubuntu. Lots of old Apple gear is now obsolete: profit! Apple is brilliant at making money.I usually use Linux VPSs in the cloud with very special configurations that are single purpose, but now I will use my many Linux systems laying about.

I am mostly retired. My work involves several zoom meetings a week where I act as an advisor to a South Korean AI startup. They also fund some time every month for personal research.I do also spend a lot of time writing, lately working on a Python based AI book. I want my new book to be relevant and useful in the age of Transformer models, ChatGPT, etc., but I also want to include a small bit of old fashioned symbolic AI. I decided to put an “Optional” material flag on these chapters.

Interesting material on deep learning, continuous learning, etc., I just bookmarked this on YouTube. BTW, in 2013 I had a long conversation with Chelsea Finn over Sunday brunch at her parents house when she was an undergraduate at MIT. Interesting to see the trajectory of her career: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLoROMvodv4rMIJ-TvblAIkw28Wxi27B36I had met her Dad via a friend and he thought that I would enjoy talking with his daughter about her career.

I am mostly a Lisp (all the Lisps!) developer but I have also been totally been enjoying writing a new Python AI book the last few months.I just saw a great list of Python libraries and utilities, about half I had not known about before: https://tryolabs.com/blog/2022/12/26/top-python-libraries-2022

My interview for the Front Matter podcast is now on YouTube youtu.be/cZImG5C_jw8 Covers my origin story, history of AI, and AI in the era of ChatGPT, and lots of other things. The interview was a lot of fun to do. BTW, I love using the leanpub.com platform for writing and we went into a bit of detail on the leanpub writing process.I also talked about releasing my works using a Creative Commons license.

I probably have an unpopular opinion on Reddit’s action of charging an API fee for 3rd party apps. Reddit is a company and can do what they want. This is a big factor in the uptick of open protocols and services like Mastodon.I think original founder Alexis Ohanian’s heart is generally in a good place. I enjoyed his talk at Google in 2013, mostly about his charitable work, and it was great talking with him afterwords.

@clive Hello Clive, did you try experimenting with the prompt, for example adding “use the web interface to check your answers”?

I just added a short chapter on using the Anthropic completion API to my Common Lisp book. Here is a link to the start of the new material https://leanpub.com/lovinglisp/read#leanpub-auto-using-the-anthropic-claude-llm-completion-apiIf you have been using OpenAI’s APIs from Common Lisp and want to try using Anthropic, this new material should save you a few minutes work getting setup.

@rms I removed all Discord clients from all my computers: I just won't use company products or platforms that require it. In a similar way I didn't install VSCode on my new laptop purchased last month, and just did some minor changes to my writing and coding setups to always use Emacs. BTW, I bought the printed Emacs manual from you about 40 years ago.

@rms I think the far right in the US has really screwed up big-time with ICE. I have friends and family across the political spectrum and I have heard nothing but condemnation of ICE violence and lack of legal oversight from ‘normal people.’
