Ouch, with all the #iOS #mastodon apps available out there the first result in the App Store isn’t what I was expecting. It’s an ad, true. That actually reinforces my behaviour of “never click on #ads, anywhere, to avoid bad surprises”

@stefano the post says “I made the client promise not to reach another 1690 days of uptime but to timely update as required” and I wonder if the client would be better off with you managing updates for them

@stefano I’m not sure I understand the relationship between Mastodon and Lemmy. On the one hand they are both based on ActivityPub. On the other hand I see that you gave an account here and an account on Lemmy. Are they linked? Is this the same post I see in the Lemmy link or did you copy and paste it here?

@stefano in principle I really like the idea but I see many practical hurdles. The moment you say “you’re on your own but you can keep it running” the number of people who could bother with this becomes incredibly small. Then there is the angle where you’re using a device for a totally different purpose than what it was designed for. It could work but I’m not sure it would work really well.

@stefano as much as I like the idea of re-using old devices I believe it would be more effective to put the effort to make sure they can work for their original purpose as long as possible, that they are repairable.Instead of saving a handful of phones repurposed as home servers or security cameras that would have a much bigger impact.Said that, why can’t we have both? In an ideal world we would have long-lasting, repairable devices that can then be repurposed as we like

@stesnac how did it go? It’s always good to see people experimenting with low powered devices. Is NetBSD the best fit for older Raspberry Pi?

@stesnac sad but not too surprising…. that CPU is really underpowered for today’s standards. For comparison, GoToSocial docs say a Raspberry Pi Zero W is too slow while it works on a RPI Zero W 2 https://docs.gotosocial.org/getting_started/ I wouldn’t expect Alpine to solve the issue but it could be worth a try, “for science” :)

Wow, #Cloudflare added an option to block #AI #bots from scraping the website they host.I wasn't expecting this level of pushback from a major Internet companyhttps://blog.cloudflare.com/declaring-your-aindependence-block-ai-bots-scrapers-and-crawlers-with-a-single-click
