@penguin42 @TechConnectify now that you mention Python, one other prominent example where whitespace is significant are Makefiles. The author of the original ‘make’ tool quickly realized that it was a mistake but the tool already had 10 users so he dared not change it.

@mitchmarq42xyz @nnungest Tramp also supports sudo, very usefull for instance to use together with org-mode (e.g. in links or shell code blocks)

@colinsmatt11 @screwtape I am pretty sure that GNU Hurd was the original plan; if it is Linux now, it has been forced upon GNU by the neverending development story of the Hurd kernel.Should we criticize Stallman, it should be for the decision to start the GNU project with doing GCC and friends. It is a big question if the Linux kernel (and countless other free C-based UNIX utilities) had happened at all, if not for there being a gratis high-quality C development system.

@hayley @luis Since Lisp predates C with like two decades, that is perhaps a bit bold statement.I would also maintain that C being a darling of VM construction is only part language design, it is also hugely due to toolchain availability. Before GCC, language implementations were largely commercial sofware, often with a significant pricetag. UNIX implementations used to bundle C compilers but that stopped at some point but it just amplifies the point.

@galdor A surprise to me as well, though I doubt you would be able to find any CL implementation without QUASIQUOTE. The #CommonLisp specification is not perfect, but we knew that already.

@SDF , is there a way to donate to the running of the SDF mastodon instance (or SDF in general)?

No matter where you stand in thye discussion around Meta and the fediverse, please do remember to contribute to the running of your current fediverse instance, if you at all has the possibility (and if you for some reason do not think it is worthy of support, move somewhere that is).Running a server is not free.#meta #fediverse #fedipact

@galdor If you are on a Debian or Ubuntu Linux system, you can also install the hyperspec as a package. On Mac, both MacPorts and HomeBrew seems to have it packaged up as well.

@galdor @PaniczGodek @larsbrinkhoff Looking at the list of Symbolics people at the bottom of the article, makes me very envious, it must have been so cool to work there.

@mms What about emacs-daemon functionality are you missing? I am not sure what is remote and what is local in your setup, but it should work to run a daemonized emacs on a remote and connect to it from your local machine, using emacsclient. The easiest would be to connect to the remote via ssh and then start emacsclient (tty or gui) to connect to the running emacs instance.

@stux @thomasfuchs Perhaps it is part of a DDOS attack or it is just doing some cryptomining.https://arstechnica.com/security/2024/01/a-previously-unknown-worm-has-been-stealthily-targeting-linux-devices-for-a-ye

@galdor @vikingkong Not that I directly disagree with you on Common Lisp, I am still a bit puzzled about what criteria you are using to judge. As for exists, very very few languages ever die out completely Common Lisp certainly will be around 30 years from now. As for (direct) utility to the vast majority of developers, C is a strange selection. It is by now mostly relegated to niche areas like embedded development and runtimes.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @Ruth_Mottram And one has any thoughts as to what would happen if risk assessment is not working, one just has to look back at the financial crisis in 2008. The problem that the subprime mortgages had been divided up to a degree where nobody knew who was exposed how badly. Result: the global financial froze over and governments around the world had to put up some serious bailout money.

@meatlotion @jp One would think that some of the roughly 70 mio americans receiving social benefits via SSA would have noticed if it wasn’t working. If any of the high school kids and Tesla engineers has discovered breakage, they have so far failed to share it with a wondering public. The danish government has made two major attempts at making part of the tax system “more appropriate for this era” and both ended in very expensive disasters.
