EU dude says, in essence, that manufacturers have the same responsibility towards open source code that they would have towards code they wrote themselves. And that this creates incentives for manufacturers to figure out how to make that work. This is music to my ears as an employee of Sonar/Tidelift, but booooyyyy. If they actually enforce that strictly it’ll simply be the end of software development in the EU.

Banged this out over tea this morning. TLDR: the FSF/OSI four freedoms are myopic in their focus on software developers, and we should complement them by asking what freedoms non-developers value.https://lu.is/2025/02/freedoms-for-who-revisited-briefly/

It’s really really embarrassing that @TheASF still distributes OpenOffice, leaving people like this schoolteacher (name omitted to spare them spam) to think it’s a maintained or viable alternative. My casual count suggests LibreOffice has done 40+ releases since OOo last did a release.

@TheASF Don’t know how many of those are security releases in the shared codebase but gonna guess… more than zero.

@evan related, also ponder why you probably know more about UK politics than Canadian, and certainly know more about either of those than Mexican, even though Mexico and Canada are vastly more important to your day to day lived experience as an American than the UK.

@axbom I’ve always treated it as a cautionary tale. This makes that nicely explicit.

@SuperDicq academic publishing is a completely insane business, I’ve seen (and on at least 1-2 occasions) paid >$200 for ebooks.

(There’s something deep to say about the intersection of what @polotek is saying and the impact of AI-centric coding on FOSS, but it’s Friday of a long week and I can’t tease it out)

A lot of #solarpunk folk could do with reading this thread. What is possible with modern concepts but a massively reduced compute budget? From: @nina_kali_nina https://tech.lgbt/@nina_kali_nina/115242939849102943

@funkylab yeah I’m getting this from Wikidata, which for something like this is a… winding maze of idiosyncracy. Eg lawyer and judge are instances of “legal occupation” rather than “occupation”?
