@MetalSamurai @fediversenews It’s incredibly crude. But how do you track bad actors and their misbehavior if we don’t track user data? That is literally the only place it makes sense to track bad behavior. I suspect the answer is that instance owners do track that user data informally and outside of the Fediverse, which is unsafe and probably breaks laws in some countries. Humans will build tools for themselves if you don’t build them first .You can delete the post, on your instance, but can you get rid of that post completely once it has populated other servers? I don’t think so? Not without a coordinated effort. And another problem with gradations is that they require rules and definitions. And each instance may have different rules and definitions leading to inconsistency and confusion in the user base.Example: I post a review of a game I am playing. People from multiple servers react negatively to my post. Words fly, things are said, rules are broken.Who actions who? My instance owner can action the people on my server, but the other folks, you just have to notify the other instance owner of the behavior. Whether they act or not is on them. Apparently user misbehavior is not where most instance owners spend their time. But I suspect they will take up more time the more we grow.

@jeff @fediversenews Uhm, I’ve been around since 89. I’m completely familiar with Usenet and IRC. But comparing companies with users in the multi millions to those technologies is a bit like apples and oranges. Also, there are those pesky laws now.

@rolle What many of you seem to be missing is that unlike Twitter, the onus is on YOU to be responsible for your toots. If you insist on talking ad nauseum about a topic, the tradition here is for you to CW the conversation. That way those of us who don’t want to read it don’t have to. We aren’t triggered, we don’t have to read a topic about which we don’t care. The same with US Pol and Brexit and NSFW topics.It would take you a lot less time than writing this disclaimer: “I liked Twitter, I’m here because the cool kids are, but I’m still going to treat peeps the same way as on Twitter.”PS. Yes I know other people aren’t doing it. They too are all from Twitter and apparently old traditions do not apply.

Yea, I can see why you did well on Twitter.How about you be courteous to those who came before you and follow their traditions. Unless you think you’re more special than one of the creators of the fediverse who does use CWs for this purpose.

@atomicpoet I am logged in on my instance. Talking to my friends from my instance. Someone from another instance sees my post and doesn’t like the topic. They alert it and want my instance owner to force everybody on my instance to CW the conversation. Even though it is not breaking the rules of my service and our rules are similar with most other LGBTQ+ instances, they start talking defederation. This is broken. And it doesn’t become less broken the larger we get.

@DaveRussell No there really shouldn’t be. Just like not all 18 year olds are adults, not adults age mentally at the same pace. What you are suggesting is ageist. A required annual visit to Walter Reed for tests for physical and cognitive issues would be easy to put in place and as long as EVERY Congressional member is required to take it. @1finekitty
