If this six year old network with millions of users is ever going to make it, it's going to have to start catering to my specific vision for it.

Here's the latest Mastodon development roadmap: https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2021/12/roadmap/Some interesting stuff in here, like reply controls, dynamic roles, and groups potentially replacing (or only supplementing?) the local timeline. Seems like some items have already been implemented in v4, though—like batch filter rules and post editing.

The pawoo.net acquisition should serve as a warning that the growth and news coverage of the past two months has drawn the attention of investors who see this non-profit product as a potential revenue stream. The most populous servers will likely be targets for acquisition. Going forward, you're going to need a lot more clarity around the ownership and funding of your home server.

This strikes me as the biggest potential threat to Mastodon, and by extension the fediverse. If corporations can figure out a way to monetize it, buying established servers is more efficient than starting fresh. Most servers are currently break-even or worse, so offloading the cost and effort may make even a lowball buyout offer seem worth it. And once corporate ownership becomes commonplace, there will be a drive toward consolidation.Nominal decentralization, masking actual assimilation.

Check all that apply: You'd be happy with quote-boosts if they…

@Quinnae_Moon There must be some mistake, this is an ANTI-VIRAL network.

@FroehlichMarcel A few potential issues:1. "Active users" entails being active, at which point you're generating revenue for Twitter.2. Even if inactive accounts counted, Musk could just purge them — which I think he's ultimately likely to do, even if only to dodge this law.3. He could also reinstate Twitter's old rule about releasing inactive handles, so squatting to protect yours may ultimately prove useless.4. Staying on makes you vulnerable to lock-in: https://merveilles.town/@lrhodes/109527045739249025

@FroehlichMarcel A lot of this presumes that Musk feels constrained by the law, whereas most of the evidence suggests that he'd almost always rather ask forgiveness than permission. My advice for anyone still maintaining a Twitter account is to approach it as you would an infosec vulnerability.

My personal theme for 2023 will be: "empty it out."All of the ideas I've been sitting on and nurturing for years and years. They're blocking the grates. Time to go through, write them down, and declare that final.Empty out the system. That's the only way to make room for new thoughts, new ideas, new plans, new life.

If you don't want bots pushing writers out of work, I'd suggest making the costs of this outweigh the rewards: https://futurism.com/the-byte/cnet-publishing-articles-by-aiUnsubscribe from their newsletters. Unsubscribe from their feeds. Mute them on social media.

I just unsubscribed from a blog because the author was using AI images to illustrate their posts, and I'm not sure if that's overzealous of me or not.

re: those sock puppet accounts that popped up on soc.ua-fediland.de overnight, the banner photo that put everyone on high alert was a picture of the Azov regiment, a far right military group that Russian propagandists often point to when arguing that Ukraine is run by Nazis. If you see that picture or those flags featured on an account, there's a good chance it's someone trying to discredit Ukraine—which seems to have been the goal here.

A useful fediverse service to have would be a web app you could sign into and give the name of a server you're thinking of migrating to, and it would check your followers/follows against that instances moderated servers list and tell you who you'd lose in the migration.

I don't know how much traction #LeaveTwitterDay will get. (Though, at 200+ boosts, the original post counts as bona fide Fediverse viral.) But on the off chance that it does spike another wave, that gives admins and mods here a month to prepare.

One lesson of the Twitter meltdown is: When you build networks and communities on a platform, it's important to reinforce them with off-platform connections. Make sure you know how to contact them in other ways. Exchange email addresses or phone numbers with the people you trust. If a connection to some other person or group is important to you, don't count on any one platform to sustain it.

re: that last boost… I actually dislike Discord a great deal, and won't be sore over having a good reason for leaving, if/when it comes to that.

From time to time, there's some tentative discussion about what Mastodon and the Fediverse at large should do When the Brands Arrive.I'd argue that the first wave is already here, it's just maybe not the brands we expected — not Coke or Facebook or whatever, but rather Medium, Wordpress, Tumblr et al, staking their claims on the Fediverse and testing out what differences (i.e. changes) they can make to the development of this space.

Out of curiosity, anyone have any data on how many Mastodon instances are hosted on one of the recognized managed services (Masto.host, Hostdon, Spacebear, Ossrox, Weingärtner IT, Fedi.monster, Cloudplane), and what proportion of the total network that constitutes, in terms of servers, active users, or both?

There should be opt-in-only hashtags. Andtags, maybe, like &meta. They'd work exactly like hashtags, except that posts including an andtag would only show up for people who search or follow that tag. Useful for, say, posting info that's useful only if you're in &London, without cluttering up the timelines of people who aren't.Alternately, Mastodon could just make it so that hashtags in Unlisted posts work that way. That's probably more elegant, tbh.
