is anyone good on the #history of #printing able to tell me what to call the code that appears on the back cover of commercial promotional leaflets, catalogues, booklets etc? They follow a similar format:An order reference no (No. 850), the size of the print run (50M=50 thousand copies), and a date code (July 1937)They’re useful for dating literature like this, but I can’t work out what they’re called! Please boost for reach!@keelan#histodon #ephemera #Documentation #vintage #research

@theogrin @realhackhistory That reminds me - I've talked to UK phreaks who were active in the 60sThey would pingpong a call back and forth between two local exchanges (CO's)By doing this you could occupy all the junction circuits that linked the two exchanges, effectively isolating them from eachother. The intent usually wasn't to deny service, it was to hear the cascade of sounds you get as the call is finally put throughDenying service to a villiage/small town was just a side effect.

@theogrin @realhackhistory That's not to say it was /never/ done maliciously - just that the people I talked to never claimed that they had done.Oh, and I've absolutely been told off by grumpy museum volunteers for demonstrating this to friends in a UK museum. The cascade of clicks and ping noises you get as the junctions all go through was worth it though, and you can be sure I'll do it again next time I visit!

I’m finally getting back to projects that I ran out of time for earlier in the year and had to drop.I’ve fixed my fax machineI’ve been using and reusing the roll that came with it, rewinding and printing over the top repeatedly until I got it working, but that nyancat is new progress! It received a fax!Now I can get back to building the “fox facts faxback facility” that faxes you facts about foxes

Today in "weird stuff I forgot I owned"The PhonePIC is a PIC programmer from the early 2000s, that allows you to program a microcontroller by sending it DTMF tones. The board has a mic attached to it, that you hold up to you phones handset and then press keys to write programs!I'm not sure if this makes PIC programming easier, or harder.Manual: https://downloads.paulseward.com/PhonePIC/PhonePIC.pdfEdit for tags: #pic #microcontroller #phone #dtmf #arduino
