a decade of people blabbering "twitter is dead seriously 4real im quitting" has probably made me immune to the talk... but the og twitter community on mastodon might have me convinced that the broken clock might be right this time?(also the fact that the protocol is classic oss crunky duct tape probably means it's inevitable that this is what the world is going to foist on generations of programmers)

at some point it's going to be trivial to spin up your own instance but what's the long game of content moderation then? is it inevitable that a handful of mega instances start sharing a blacklist of small (single-user) hosts?

@chockenberry is that purely vulnerability-level or does it deal with the fuzzier side of "content" violations?

incentive structure is all wrong, i signed up for the first mastodon instance i came across years ago, it happens to still be running by sheer luck, but hosting is a commodity, you *don't* want innovation to happen on that side of the the stack so there's no mechanism to differentiate, so folks will end up running these things as charities until they get bored or wind up holding data hostage to recoup costs... or what am i missing? <handwavey communities blah blah something?>

@neven so few people are hosting their own stuff nowadays (and it seems to be actively discouraged culturally here). these stacks are just too complicated.

nostr almost solves some of this. the worst thing about it is that it, you know, doesn't actually work (maybe still early days, pretty flakey when I tried it). and totally misses the opportunity to use crypto in a smart way to a) align incentives and b) kill spamso mastodons are probably going to just consolidate, maybe someone should prioritize e2e encrypted dms because that seems important if 1 or 2 companies are going to end up running the thing
