Taking down research notes in #TiddlyWiki, and the tag & field structure I designed is perfect for my organizational needs! It took me a while to design the information structure, but it was totally worth it.

A corollary to "It's okay to like problematic things" is that it's okay to admit that something you like may be problematic, and ESPECIALLY that you don't speak over people of marginalized identities about what is bigoted against them.

What are some lively metaphorical expressions about awareness and knowledge that are not explicitly or implicitly ableist? I'm fond of "can't make heads or tails," for instance. #WritingCommunity

#WritersCoffeeClub Jun 12 - How much of your ideals are imbued in your work? Give an example. My ideals are a part of who I am so of course my work will embody them, but I don't write about ideal societies or people so the relationship is a little complex and refracted. Perhaps my foremost practical ideal is to tell the truth of the world, even (especially) in fiction, because dominance wants us to lie about the world to uphold violent power structures. Some examples:- Fat romantic heroines, a family of disabled refugees, nobility and the commons in dynamic political give-and-take and not a paternalistic savior relationship (big WIP)- Lesbian protagonists working toward safety & community (A Very Long Malaise, The Dream of the God's Wife, short WIP)- Amputee protagonist does extreme violence against Nazis (Les marguerites fleuriront ce soir)- Transfem Mulan, critique of militarism (A Maiden's War, unpublished short story)- Non-speaking protagonist, ecoterrorist resistance (unpublished short story)

Periodic reminder that Disney's adaptations of #Mulan lied to you like many other pro-Han and military propagandistic adaptations. The original Ballad of Mulan is unflinching about the destruction and suffering of military life, and I will go to my grave arguing that it's a transfeminine narrative. Here's my #translation: https://ljwrites.blog/posts/ballad-of-mulan/

" #Navajo babies . . . typically weren’t given names until they have their first laugh. . . . But why wait until they laugh?"Navajos are great observers, so when it came to newborns – and this is supported to modern data on infant mortality – the period between birth and the first laugh is most critical. Without prenatal care or modern monitoring technology, the first laugh was the best marker for Navajos to judge survival. When baby laughs, it’s a sign that she has found a very important lifeline – laughter itself."Of course, when baby first laughs, a celebration – or ceremony – is held. The one to make baby laughs has the responsibility of making the event happen, because it is said that baby will inherit qualities of that person – and there’s no better trait than generosity." - from Navajo #WordOfTheDay, awéé' "baby" https://navajowotd.com/word/awee/ #language #indigenous

#菜根譚 四。 閒適篇Words from Lean Times Part 4: Tranquility1. 龍可豢 非真龍,  虎可搏 非真虎,故 爵祿可餌榮進之輩 必不可籠淡然無欲之人,鼎鑊可及寵利之流 必不可加飄然遠引之士。The dragon that may be penned is no true dragon; The tiger that may be bound is no true tiger.Hence, titles and riches may bait glory-pushers butNever cage tranquil persons free of desire, whilePunishment and torture may reach gain-seekers butNever change lofty scholars removed from temptation.#CaigentanProject wiki: https://wiki.writeout.ink/ljwrites/translation/caigentan/start

Start a #blog. Start one because the practice of writing at length, for an audience you respect, about things that matter to you, is itself valuable. Start one because owning your own platform is a form of independence that becomes more important as centralized platforms become less trustworthy. Start one because the format shapes the thought, and this format is good for thinking. The blog won't save us. But it's one of the tools we'll need if we're going to save ourselves. - Joan Westenberg, The Case for Blogging in the Ruins https://www.joanwestenberg.com/the-case-for-blogging-in-the-ruins/ #IndieWeb
