@freemo it’s not “funny” that Stockton Rush specifically died because he “has” (had) a lot of money, but it’s undeniable poetic justice that he did. He repeatedly argued against regulations, refused to certify the vessel and ignored warnings from dozens of experts. The deaths of everyone but him on board are tragic, but they were killed by his incompetence and hubris, not by an act of God.

@stux that depends a lot on what the "other instance" won't block. an instance that refuses to defederate anything regardless of reason is the fedi equivalent of a tor exit node. you're still responsible for spreading (and caching) illegal content even if that content didn't originate from your instance, so I don't blame any #mastoadmin that is skeptical towards the negligence of non-moderated instances and chooses to block them entirely.

@stefano I guess another solution if there’s no user agent to go by is to use something like fail2ban to react on >N lines of a certain type in the httpd log triggering either a temporary firewall drop rule or a 403 landing page if possible. With a short block (<1m?) it might even be enough to make bots give up without inconveniencing real humans too much.

@stefano cloud images often come without any swap configured, sometimes it’s as easy as just configuring swap period to at least avoid OOM murder. with Ubuntu you also have the luxury of making it ZFS.

@stefano if swap isn’t compressed and what’s being put there is text for example it could make a big difference, not just for storage but paging throughput as well. still, obviously there’s no way to fix bad code with platform changes.
