@futurebird In Latin America, there are plenty of neighborhoods where drug dealers run sort of a parallel state. E.g, you have to buy pirate cable TV from them, instead of paying for the legitimate one, or else. In some places, it's not safe for the police to just patrol, they come only in stealth or in force. Some factions span large areas of a country, and I know of at least one which has international reach.Even then, we don't have the expression "narcoterrorism", at least not in Brazil.

@futurebird Famously, Auguste de Saint-Hilaire, after visiting the country for six years, would have said "either Brazil wipes out the leafcutters, or the leafcutters will wipe out Brazil". In Portuguese the phrase says "saรบva", which Wikipedia says it's a catchall word for the "cutters" in Brazil, all of which are in the genus Atta.

@futurebird In Portuguese we can have two "haves" in a row like that, but fortunately we don't use it nearly as much to create perfect tenses

@futurebird It is at least twice as convoluted as the hardest problem of the kind I ever had to solve, back in the day

@futurebird Remember the urban legend about inserting advertising frames in movies? I guess we'd know by now if it worked. But: if 800 ads was the 2000s, by now ads (including those by influencers) must be so numerous they approach ambient noise for chronically-online people without ad blockers. I guess the advertisers' dream has finally come true.

@futurebird these canes are rare were I live, and I have no idea of they taste like what you've got. I heard people in German (or was it Europe in general?) liked chewy sweets more than the US, and I wonder if candy canes are from some forgotten past when the US liked chewy sweets

@futurebird IIRC they had to go to Bethlehem to be counted I'm a census because they were originally from there. Also, I've read somewhere this part of the story resonates another story about an earlier prophet, just like the part with a precursor of Pontius Pilate ordering the murder of all first-borns is to align the story of Jesus with the one of Moses.

@futurebird Other people here said Satan in the Bible is not the fallen angel, and that's what I came to say. They say Satan is more like "the enemy", and they probably know better than me, but I've heard Satan was more like the personification of temptation, of something we have in ourselves.

@futurebird Perhaps something with two more widely known words, like "basket hairs" (more an example than a suggestion)

@futurebird 1. They are probably trying to surf the new mayor's wave??2. This Portuguese-language video from BBC News says most of the pistachio actually comes from the US. Production is increasing steadily, so they are pushing for increasing adoption so that they can keep selling for a high price.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xR3881oE8dA

@futurebird Federal university, so via a civil service examination. It didn't even have an interview phase, to avoid any favoritism.

@futurebird the issue of one-liners reminded me of something I read somewhere else. The best way of having a one-liner is writing a nice function, following all the good practices, and then having a one-liner which just calls the function (ofc with arguments and attributing its output to some variable)
