Being very used to my Mastodon feed now makes it very evident how ad-heavy other platforms are. It’s refreshing to only see posts that I made a conscious effort to see. And it’s bonkers that it’s a rare concept.

@tek I actually only used the chronological feed on Twitter back in the day. But even now that is inundated with ads.But yeah, I long gave up on using Instagram in any fashion as it always imposed its own way.Even with physical newspapers, no one reads the entire thing! Each person has their own interests that they flick between! It’s not a new concept 😅

#GameDesign trope is really really dislike. In War Thunder two teams fight over objectives. Outside the game you can get ‘objectives’ to make you play a little differently to meet complete the objective and unlock some boost.Great in theory, to nudge players to try new things.1. The execution is utterly awful as the objective you get sometimes makes you a liability on your team as you play for your side objective as it doesn’t matter if you win or not.

2. You often get matches where it is impossible to complete your side objective. If you wanted to complete that now this is a “wasted match”3. This is a bit of a ‘me’ problem. I want to finish these missions. The pay off from them is garbage. The frustration from points 1 and 2 is massive. It 100% makes the game less fun for me, yet I still care about it.4. Even if I managed to not care about it, and purely wanted to win. Others do play for side objectives only, making them quit out early.

@stfn thanks for sharing that. I love the history of nightshade (and the name). Didn’t know it looked so beautiful!

@futurebird @boulder @RickiTarr this was my question too. Doesn’t everyone see issues and what them to not be issues???

@futurebird some of them are very good at promoting system thinking. They can do so in a method unique among all artistic media.

I learned that in early ways of telecom each provider only sold access to THEIR customers. So you couldn’t call a friend if they weren’t also a customer.Either you pay for multiple services, or convince your friend to join ‘your’ company.Sounds really stupid now that we don’t have that. However, there are us on the fediverse who are happy with a protocol to allow anyone to connect, struggling to convince those in walled gardens to move away.

@wjmaggos purely personally, I don’t see significant value from this.More people to follow? Don’t care, I don’t follow everyone on mastodon, I’m already missing out gems.More people follow me? I don’t care, my account isn’t used to drive any economical value.I can see there being frustrations as protocols fail to work with each other. Or as funded tries to absorb ‘free’.Or culture shifting towards more hustle due to the nature of ATp being more about money generation.

@wjmaggos I don’t think a bridge is necessary for that though. As it’s not that APp is exclusionary from a technical standpoint (although it is socially). My worry is that a bridge will not result in best info and ideas. Instead it will homogenize ideas around a local peak of ‘best’.With separation we have two local peaks of best and sometimes one side is better, sometimes the other. But we can learn from each other.

Eg, Vancouver sky train developed after seeing the nightmare of highway traffic in LA.A local decision can be made based on learning from another. In one mega city, that be much harder to do due to increasing layers of bureaucracy
